Merts, Great to hear about Bendigo.

Some USA mainsteam beers are made from rice and appear and taste lighter than the Ausssie beers but the alc % is about same.
I enjoy them in the summer, for example when i come home on a hot eve with the camera and peel the black tape off the Ricoh label.

Heavier USA beers I enjoy (strong and bitter compared to Australia) are in Ca, Anchor Steam, in Pa, Yuengling , otherwise the famous Boston Lager.
In Detroit, try a Detroit Pale Ale from Atwater Brewery.

New Belgium Rampant is my favorite. I've never actually chewed a mouthful of raw hops, but I think I have a good idea of what it would taste like.

All the beer talk lost on me. I don't touch alcohol much. I don't think it evil or anything. My rule is that I can get plenty stupid and into enough trouble without any outside additives!!! Plus I'll have to agree with dansamy on the thrill of drinking the stuff!

Thank goodness for gluten-free beers, I'd nearly lost touch and I failed miserably as a wine snob. So many choices now, and zero in 2005!
My cheese is usually Swiss, my bacon Canadian - but I sure miss my Irish ales and stouts

So are you an ex-Bendigonian mate?

I can tell you it is probably a tad warmer here today than it is where you are. Around 37 degrees (99F) at 3pm, with a pretty stiff northerly breeze.
I will be taking a ginger beer into the pool for a dip when I get home today.

I must get to the US for a holiday one of these days. It would be good to use all my Ricoh-Pentax gear in another country. (and sample the local craft beers).

Merts,
Yes 1967 to 1972, BIT , now La Trobe University.

We had -6 Celsius in Michigan last week, it is +5 C now.

Neighbor cocktail party next week and nobody likes beer in the cold so,
if you need recipe for a cold eve in Bendigo, mine is :

"Ricoh K-3 Whisky Sour" :
30% of immediately squeezed Florida (Mildura?) Navels juice, 15 % of immediately squeezed Mexico (Leeton?) lemons , 15% of simple brown syrup from Hawaii (Bundaberg?) Brown sugar, and 30% of Johnny Walker Red.
Into the blender with 5 pieces ice and pour.

Have more supplies on hand.

Wow. Small world. I studied Civil Engineering at the BCAE (LaTrobe Uni Bgo) between 1981 and 1984.

I usually drink my whisky (of the single malt variety) straight and at room temperature, but that whisky sour sounds pretty good. I might have to give it a try.
I just happen to have some Mildura Navals on the Kitchen bench, and my mum and dad grow lemons in their back yard.

Now we have beer and cocktails. Anyone care to share their hangover cures?

500mg Vitamin B10 with the water before bed. Turns your "flow" bright yellow in the morning - good to know that in advance.

ALT:

in a 12 oz. tall tumbler ->

3 Ice cubes
8 oz V-8 Vegetable Juice
1/4 tsp. Sea Salt
1/4 tsp Celery Salt
1/2 tsp. coarse ground Black Pepper
dash or two lemon juice
dash or two Tabasco
dash or two Worcestershire Sauce
3 oz. any good unflavored Vodka
stir with short stalk celery

Drink the morning after the night before. Repeat until hangover goes away.

Bloody Marys in the morning to fix a hangover?? Although I worked with a guy who lived by the idea that the best way to avoid a hangover is never be sober!! He finally ended up in rehab!

This thread was really amusing until most of you got onto a tangent about beer (again, like the last time we had a 'silly' convo.. it ended up being about beer)
