In 1974 67% of Global Gross Production was occured within the United States. At that time American businesses, generally run by men who had served in their youth during WWII, simply believed the rest of the world needed to accomodate us, not the other way around.

Today roughly 23% of Global Gross Production occurs within the USA, but 44% of consumption still occurs here. Culturally it is challenging to extinguish nearly 70 years of accumulated expectation, especially when nearly half your customers expect it.

Were getting a pretty good small farm presence going around here. Free range chicken, pork, beef and lamb. Plus all the fruit and veg goodness. Farmers markets are everywhere during the warm months!!

[EDIT: I messed up. Those figures are for capitalization of publicly traded companies] That is general knowledge from daily reading as part of my job. Give me a couple days and I can probably dig out citations, but it is sourced as translated OCR text from CIA reports.

Then again, you probably have the skill and the time to do it too. Please proceed at your leisure.

US output as a % of world economy:
Highest percentage was 38.69% in 1960 (which at least validates my point)
1980 (earliest I can easily find): 22.5% (roughly)
2012: 18.3% (roughly)
