I once killed a yellow jacket hive I had in an old stump that wasn't ground out. But I did it with some chemical the guy at the local hatchery sold me, mixed in a gallon bucket of water, at dusk. Smelled like The Bug Man.

Not at all dramatic, thank you very much - but I sure was ready to run like the time I was caught by the House Mother in the Tri Delt house after hours.

I can maybe do better than that ...

You know why in car repair books they often recommend removing the negative ground cable off the car's battery before doing under hood repairs ??? Well, there's a good reason for it ...

I was changing an in-body fuel filter on a carburetor after loosening the metal gas pump tube to the carb (which leads to gas getting on your hands, etc.) and then clumsily pushed the metal fuel line tube back into the (uncovered) positive pole of the alternator ... Zzzzit, Spark, Ignition and SHAZAM !!! Instant hair removal on hands and left fore arm ... ... more fear than harm. But I did quite a jig dance ... first put myself "out" and then threw a thick cloth cover over the small fire burning on the intake manifold.

SO REMEMBER: READ THE MANUAL AND THE WARNINGS !!! No hairdryers while in the bathtub kind of stuff ...

Another reason I won't get a K-3 ... Still never make it through the (translated) manual ... still never read nor take heed of the warnings ... and besides, it will become a K-3 "Classic" when the next version K-3 "iis-wq" comes out ... J

Yellow Jackets are very aggressive, and hyper aware of the world around them. Get too close to their hive and they will actively purse you as a perceived threat.

Yet like all wasps and bees, they are only active during the day, their activity being connected to the light of the sun and the warmth of the day. Yellow Jackets are carnivorous. They eat the flesh of dead animals. Some Yellow Jackets nest underground in partially or fully buried decaying wood from trees or stumps, others will build a nest in trees covered with a paper like substance they make from cellulose harvested from the woody portion of trees. They chew it up, then regurgitate it and cover their nest where they create the cells for laying their eggs.

Either type of nest will be vigorously defended, and unlike honey bees who die after stinging once, Yellow Jackets can sting repeatedly, and their venom is very powerful.

I am allergic the the sting of bees, hornets and wasps. Because of that I must always be vigilant and watch out for them, lest I get a sting and then need to visit the emergency room. I used to carry an EpiPen, but they require periodic replacement, and the insurance would not cover it. And of course I am a needle wuss, so I doubt that I could ever stick myself anyway.

So watch out for them yellow and back little basterds when you are out making photographs, even in town or around the house.

Although if you don't have a K3 in your hand you might get a pass!

1. You know how to choose a wife (but you knew that already)
2. I would definitely prefer a K-3 over lutefisk and pickled herring

...and that's why I won't buy a K-3!

For the record: National Geographic tells me my genes arrived here at the time the current ice age subsided enough to make it habitable up here. That says a lot about lutefisk and pickled herring...!
