It's not that much different. The skill of locating & accessing a vein is the same. The main difference is in getting the cannula threaded off the needle & into the vein. And when you're doing it on a kid, it takes just as much skill to safely wrestle the kid while still handing supplies to the iv starter as it does to stick the kid.

Oh, yeah...kids. They are best done on the parent's lap in a "drawing" chair with an assistant to firmly hold the arm. I cringe when I think about it, but not as much when I think about venipuncture on infants. How does scalp vein sound.

And this (all hociR's fault) is what we have come to!

Starting an iv on a kid really can't be done with them sitting in parent's lap. Phlebotomy, sure. But I need them very still for much longer in order to successfully stick, obtain labs & then, most importantly, secure the HECK out of it!

I love scalp veins. If you're under a year old & have thin hair, I'll probably stick your head. Even though it's gonna freak out your mom.

Given those two situations that I personally was witness to, I can understand the policy from the hospital's viewpoint. I do not really ever need or want to take a picture of a patient or their family. In general, I also do not take a photo for them with their camera or phone.
