Back in the day when I did a lot of phlebotomy (yeah, I know...completely different than iv) I could draw with either hand, vacutainer or syringe or butterfly. Dang, I was good. I can shoot a camera left-handed too, but when I do, all I get are selfies.

It's not that much different. The skill of locating & accessing a vein is the same. The main difference is in getting the cannula threaded off the needle & into the vein. And when you're doing it on a kid, it takes just as much skill to safely wrestle the kid while still handing supplies to the iv starter as it does to stick the kid.

Reminds me of dave chappelle.

"I like to sit on my left hand until its numb"

"I call it a stranger"

But the K-3 is no longer a stranger to me.

Oh, yeah...kids. They are best done on the parent's lap in a "drawing" chair with an assistant to firmly hold the arm. I cringe when I think about it, but not as much when I think about venipuncture on infants. How does scalp vein sound.

And this (all hociR's fault) is what we have come to!

Starting an iv on a kid really can't be done with them sitting in parent's lap. Phlebotomy, sure. But I need them very still for much longer in order to successfully stick, obtain labs & then, most importantly, secure the HECK out of it!

I love scalp veins. If you're under a year old & have thin hair, I'll probably stick your head. Even though it's gonna freak out your mom.

Rubber band. My two favorite scalp veins are that "dad vein" that every dad has when he's mad. The one right in the middle of the forehead. And behind the ear.

No. No camera involvement at all. There was an incident a few years ago. A murdered baby had no pictures, except a cell phone snap taken by a nurse. The family wanted a copy of the picture, of course. The hospital, due to patient privacy issues, was really in a spot. They clamped down HARD on cameras & cell phones after that. Another nurse lost her job about a year later over another incident involving a patient & a picture.
It is odd how photography is, and is not, allowed in our world.

You go in for one procedure or an other and various forms of imaging are almost always involved. And patients and their families surely must be allowed to take pictures.

Yet the staff is excluded.

Given those two situations that I personally was witness to, I can understand the policy from the hospital's viewpoint. I do not really ever need or want to take a picture of a patient or their family. In general, I also do not take a photo for them with their camera or phone.
