Worked in two of them. The Moorhead MN one and the Hillsboro ND one. I have also planted them, dug them out of the ground and trucked em. Kinda the main paying business in the Red River Valley.

And you are dead on regarding the smell. But after a short time it overwhelms the nose so you no longer smell it. But you know it is still there when your wife uses tongs to pick your clothes up off the bathroom floor and runs for the washing machine.

I am not sure which is worse. Maybe we should send these off to Mike Rowe so he can go do an evaluation? Lets see:
1. Driving a dump truck of chicken manure
2. Pulling a Honey Wagon in August in Northern Minnesota
3. Cleaning a Pit Toilet in a Missouri State Park in August.

Any other suggestions?

I once had to dig up an old tile septic bed in july and clean the tree roots out of the pipes. If we'd done any real work we would have had to bring it up to code. SO we could just clean, not replace anything.. the septic tank was two 40 gallon drums that had been in the ground 80 years) with couple pieces of pipe running between them. We couldn't have them pumped because it was on an island and no way to get a pump truck there.

Carthage has some interesting hsitory - particularly Civil War stuff. That part of the state was laced with particularly nasty guerillas, abolitionist raiders from Kansas, outlaw rebels, Federals from Ft. Leonard Wood and Kansas City. After the war cattle were driven to Sedalia for a few yeas until the rails moved west. Many of the gunslinger legends made famous in western movies actually happened in SW Missouri.

Then there's the 'Carthage Marble' fortunes and Leggett & Platt houses. Getting off the beaten path around Lake of the Ozarks (in the mountains) can be quite beautiful, but also reminiscent of Appalachia - quite insulated from the world, suspicious and wild.

Hopefully you didn't expose your other half to party Cove on Lake of the Ozarks.

This is probably the only thread in existence across the entire internet where knowing the topic is actually a disadvantage.

Actually, killing Albacore tuna on a two man troller sixteen hours or more per day for 21 days, no shower, no change of clothes, just shed the yellow slicker to sleep, eating bacon and bacon and acon because eggs slide off the griddle in high seas, the unloading thirty tons of frozen dead fish in Astoria before getting paid and going out to steal a Colonel Sanders statue with three boat pullers from Coos Bay probably smells worse.

You guys have me on points. Worst thing I ever had to actually do was scrape and shovel the hold of a grain barge that silage had gone sour in. Paid for college as a deckhand on the river summers.

A couple of incidental observations.

First, at the bottom of the page is found a place to add tag words so this thread shows up in searches. We can no longer add any tags for this thread because it is full.

Second, again at the bottom of this page is a small section where similar threads are listed for the benefit of anyone who is interested in pursuing further research on information found in this thread. Unfortunately I have checked every thread listed down there and absolutely none of them are remotely similar to this thread. I guess that means that there is no thread like this one.

I don't find the "aroma" of cow manure offensive unless it's particularly strong. Pig manure is a different story but there is one thing worse than that. I was once a musroom grower. One of the components of the compost was chicken manure. NOTHING, I mean NOTHING smells worse than a dump truck load of fresh chiken manure.

As a teenager I worked for a short time catching chickens at a poultry farm. You have to go in at night and get down on your knees and grab 4 in each hand by the leg, carry them out to the truck and pass them off to the guy who put them in the cages to take to the slaughterhouse. The combination of the chicken manure and the dust will make even those with the strongest of wills wretch.

A visit to a hog or cattle slaughterhouse will add new meaning to the word disgusting.

I have been to Dodge City, Kansas a few times. There are several slaughterhouses there, and tens of thousands of cattle in pens awaiting their demise. You can smell the town before you see it.

But really, there is something worse.

Much worse.

Cat poop.

The smell is awful.

Worse than anything mentioned here yet. Somehow, whatever cats eat gets turned into the most foul smelling excreta that is on this Earth. Of course the smell of what they eat isn't much better.

Enough to keep a K3 far away from any sensible photographer.

Well, I bought the K3 in memory of a season at sea stinking of dead fish and watching blue sharks twist on the outrigger lines, hooked and dragging, as I hand pulled albacore on the short six fathom stern lines. One ton of fish in an hour when in a school. Then two or three days of boredom.
