Play is scheduled for 6 hours of actual playing time each day (after two hours play is suspended for lunch, 40 minutes, and after another two hours "tea" is 20 minutes)
When the match is played in England there is a guaranteed day and a half, or two days, of rain which severely shortens the time spectators get to see play.
Rain can happen in other venues, but without the same guarantee as for England!
Of course for us Aussies, when played in England the end of play each day is 3am! (That's for us in the eastern states - Western Australia is lots different)
It can mean loss of sleep, even for my late aunt who was still sitting up watching till stumps at age 97.
So a few years ago when I was leading part of a large project with mostly US participants there was a meeting in LA. I was called earlier than expected to start leading my section late on day 1 instead of at the start of day 2. So for the fun of it I kept allusions to cricket going through the time I was presenting.
When I came in to lead I said I was sent in early as the night watchman - that lower ranking batsman sent in 30 minutes before stumps to stay in till morning to protect a top rank batsman from having to effectively start the innings twice. (They often find it takes a while to settle in.)
In the morning I said I had taken them through to stumps, survived and was not out.
I referred to play for an hour, then take drinks. (Rod missed that bit.)
Still not out at lunch.
One other member of the team at that meeting was from England. He was quite amused at how I kept that up to the bewilderment of all the Americans. They even joked about it at later meetings in the project.

Now this is just like one of the great life lessons of cricket to which I referred yesterday: "event he best batsman takes one ball to get out."
Well, there can only be one 3,000,000th post, and who knows - it could be an 'hello' message from a newly signed in member.
See, you guys NEED cricket to understand life in the universe.
Ah, maybe I can build this into my explanation of the behaviour of the ASX for the next time I talk to my stockbroker friend. I explained to him once that the contrast between the ASX and the NYSE relates to the Australian experience of the Gallipoli effect and the El Nino effect.
