Honestly, though, English is more or less English. Compared to Norwegian, where we have two written languages and dialects distinct enough to be able to tell where someone is from sometimes down to which valley they live in, and five million native speakers, British and American English is peanuts.

Walking on the beach at Coffs Harbour (NSW Australia) last August, I met a Pommy (English) couple who were holidaying. After a couple of sentences I said "you're from the Midlands, aren't you?" to which the fellow agreed.
I grew up with a lot of Pommy migrants and some of their speech was quite distinct (but I couldn't name the valley they came from!!)

I do that kind of thing quite often. Earlier this year I sat of a plane to cross the Pacific (starting in SYD). Along came a younger Asian looking woman. She said something to someone while putting her bag in overhead locker and sat down. So I asked her: "did you grow up here but also speak Vietnamese?" Kind of surprised her. I think my best like that was picking a hostess on Singapore Airlines as being from Taiwan on the basis of two words she said, in English. Now, for the challenge, try recognising accents in a language you cannot speak.
