You don't hide it. You just casually start using it. When she says something about you act surprised. "What? Oh c'mon, you remember when I bought that. It's been a while but I know you've seen it."

Thanks for showing what a 28mm can do!

You must be a ninja to snuck up that close to those birds! Great shots!

Hide the box and all packaging materials. Just start using it one day. When/if she asks about it, just say "I've always had this lens" and change the subject immediately.

Yup I can do that.

My biggest problem is how I will explain to her a UPS guy dropping off a big brown box at home. She always looks over my shoulder while I'm opening boxes. And you probably know how we can't hide that silly smile off our face every time a UPS guy arrives.

At least with a GR, I can always casually say "This? it's nothing, it's just a $100 P&S!" (C'mon, it's a white lie!)

Tell her you won a contest and got a free lens.

I guess I am lucky. My girlfriend doesn't care what I do with my money, and I don't care what she does with hers. If I tell her I bought a new lens, she will ask where I want to go so I can try it out.

I don't think I could ever be with someone who attempts to control my spending, savings, or bank accounts.

I had a wife once, but her husband came and got her.

No seriously, she tried to move in and I called her husband to get her. He asked me if I would keep her. NOPE!

Hahahaha! I had some guy at work ask me how much money he could give me to sleep with his wife so that he wouldn't have to. I declined.

Yep, I always get deliveries at work.

Mainly because then they'll deliver the stuff at the reception - no problems with [fill in name of useless parcel service] trying to deliver at home but not finding anybody at home (even if I was at home when they claim to have been there).

Same here. We've got close enough to equal incomes, separate bank accounts, and pay roughly half the bills each - and nobody cares what anybody spends their money on beyond that. Works like a charm.

They do that to everybody. I don't understand why. I've caught them walking from the delivery truck to the door with the label ready to put on the door, no package in their hands. I was watching through the peephole when I heard the truck.

This is just one of many reasons I divorced Mrs. Racer 1.0. Of course she continually demonstrated that she had no concept of how to budget and mange money either.

Mrs. Racer and I have been co-habitating for nearly 18 years and have pretty much this arrangement. It has been great not having money come between us.
