I thought 'oovering meant walking around on carpeted floors pushing a suction device to collect dust and detritus.

Like most words in the real and proper dictionary, The Oxford English Dictionary, 'oovering, which may or may not be there, has multiple meanings. The extension to the wine bottles is a kind of intuitive extension.

Ever tried explaining English to a foreigner? I only mean, explaining how it is, not why.

Well we wouldn't be Yanks then would we?

Don't try to change us, but accept us as we are.

We do that for the rest of the world . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The best explanation for English came from Usenet (and I was there when James Nicoll first posted the now-famous quote):

"The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary."

Désolé, désolé, désolé ... cruel and unusual punishment would be to send me one of those pink atrocities ...

Tough question, with no easy answer. A discussion on the topic could easily outpace the enormity of this thread.

Hey!

Maybe he should come back and then this thread would fade into obscurity.

Um, not in length. And it's fairly large in area, at least by European standards, anyway.

If this turns to politics, he won't need to come back. Those turning it to such will fade into obscurity quite abruptly.

Sorry Boss, I thought my comments were anthropology, geography, genetics, culture, etc.
I have a couple of really good friends who migrated from the Land of the Free and I am grateful to the Land of the Free for releasing them to come and live Upover (which used to be called Downunder)
My apologies.
