You Ozzies found it too tasty and went over to Vegemite instead. Even the timeline you gave makes sense - Vegemite became increasingly popular after Australian soldiers returned from WWII where they grew used to it and demanded it at home too. My personal theory is that Vegemite was added to the rations in order to make the horrors of battle less horrible in comparison

That's when it was introduced, yes. But it gained its immense popularity the way I described it. By the end of the 1940s 9 out of 10 Australian households had a jar of vegemite on the shelf.

Mr. Fox was thinking of cordite, not Vegemite. There's a strong resemblance between the two.
