I don't have that problem... when I was a kid my younger brother got tonsillitis and they decided to take his out. They tossed mine in (or should I say cut mine out) , in a two for one deal.

One of the few physical books left on my bookshelf is this one. It's from 1927.

He's on the same shelf with Byron and the various Byron bio's that I have. I take my Poe very seriously indeed. This is not the most expensive or rare volume of his works available but I think it's by far the most cool. I would not part for it though I have several e-book versions of Poe's works and have no real need of the antique bound volume anymore. Ditto Byron. I have the Complete Works and Complete Letters now. In truth I can't even hardly read the type on my antique volumes anymore, but you'd have to pry them out of my cold dead hands, particularly the 2 little volumes of his works released when he was actually alive. I have framed pics of Byron and Poe, in front of their works, actually. They are by far my 2 favorite classic authors.

The Cask is a good story, one of his best, but I prefer The Masque of the Red Death to that. In college I once freaked my Advanced Lit teacher completely out by writing a rather spooky paper that compared Ebola to The Red Death. She read it in class and half the class squirmed. It was just too much for them, laugh. (I got an A...) I'm sure the comparison has been made since but at the time it was a pretty fresh idea. Ebola wasn't something people just talked about. It was new and frightening. So much so that people didn't just make idle conversation about the epidemics the way they do now. But I couldn't help but think of TMOTRD when I first read about it as a kid. That story was so ingrained in my head and I'd seen the Corman film so many times besides. It just made total sense to me, that comparison.

I was a little evil actually. I did 3 more equally freaky Poe based papers that semester. At one point the teacher joking threatened to flunk me if I didn't quit, so I just kept on writing them to mess with her, lol. Deep down I think she was having fun though she did find it a bit morbid of me. It's POE though. I mean what's not to be morbid about? :P

No photos, but Mrs. Racer and I had some nice thick cut beef jerky just like that yesterday. We went for a drive on the Mount Loop Highway (the term 'highway' is used loosely here, it is actually a gravel/dirt road that loops from Granite Falls to Darrington through the Cascade mountians), and made a stop along the way to hike up to Big Four Mountain and the Big Four Ice Caves. The beef jerky, along with other dried and cured meats, some fruit, granola bars and water made for great energy snacks along the way.

The Mount Loop Highway is about 56 miles long from Granite Falls to Darrington. The first segment from Granite Falls to Barlow Pass is paved, about 34 miles. From Barlow Pass to the Whitechuck bridge the road is gravel/dirt. The remaining 9 miles from the Whitechuck bridge to SR530 in Darrington is paved.

The portion from Granite Falls to Barlow pass follows the South Fork of the Stillaguamish river.

The portion from Barlow pass to Darrington follows the Sauk river.

The area where the loop is was originally established in the late 1936 to provide access to the mining town of Monte Cristo, which was primarily served by railroad. Prior to that access was by railroad.

Today the four mile long road from Barlow Pass to Monte Cristo is closed. The road is private and has been washed out in a couple of places by spring flooding. There are plans to repair the road to facilitate access for cleanup of arsenic and other pollutants that remain from the years of mining during the late 1800's and early 1900's.

Today the Mount Loop Highway is provides access for many day and overnight hikes to popular peaks and lakes. Lake 22, Big Four, Robe Valley, and the Mount Pilchuck lookout to name a few. It is great to have access to such beautiful wilderness at our back door.
