Aaactually, many of our grandparents did way more home cooking with a lot of vegetables and didn't eat too much meat because it used to be less affordable back in the days

Don't say that for southeastern Oklahoma ... the deep freeze was always full of venison.

One just had to sit on the back porch for a while and shoot straight ...

And bacon grease was the "cooking oil" of choice and necessity.

Mom used to make wilted lettuce with it.
Best veggies I've ever eaten!

That's because most people were running around physically working and they didn't drive everywhere all the time. :P

True, but the food did taste so much better when it was used.

I recently started getting into the habit of saving my bacon grease in a mason jar. I figured both my grandmothers did it, so what the heck.

FWIW, my cast iron pans have never performed better then when I slather that stuff on it before frying something up.

That's vegans, the extra-crazy version of vegetarians. First rule of vegan club: tell everyone about vegan club
Vegans are kinda like mormons, I find. As long as they aren't trying to convert you, they're a pretty nice bunch. And they seem quite sane compared to their über-crazy cousins, the raw folk...

The raw folk don't bother me. I had a friend who was a raw foods eater. Actually it was quite nice knowing him. He always brought me something lovely to eat that way and knew every great farmer's market around. I used to love going with him. Living with my vegan roomie was a lot harder. She would cook the most noxious greens and sea weeds and there was always tofu something on the stove and that stuff just makes me nauseated when it cooks. I tried several of her tofu dishes, not one of them worked for me. That stuff was just plain disgusting and it does NOT taste like whatever it's cooked with. The only time I ever liked it was when she made this very dark dense chocolate tofu cheesecake and that was just because there was more than enough dark chocolate to make it work.

Plus, she'd eat tons of asparagus and take green food supplements that sometimes made sharing a bathroom a misery. She never tried to convert me but I did have to eat my meat out a lot so as to not make her retch. I'm far cooler being around the lacto-ovo vegetarians though. I can deal a bit better with that set up. That type of vegetarian they don't get quite so in your face about things. Most of the vegans I have known except for the one roomie they'd give me a very hard time about my choices that way. I'd get baleful glances because I choose to wear leather, things like that. It's a bit of an avocation for some people there's just no getting around it...

Jury's still out on the other stuff.
I'll post up some real food tomorrow.

Alright you two. No arguing about food here. This is a photography forum, and we are supposed to be arguing about photography.

You know, like Godzilla, bacon, igunaq and French cheese.

Not food.

At about ten years old I had a cage with some gerbils in it. The little critters are nocturnal. And very active. There was two of those exercise wheels in the cage for them, and both of them squeaked. I tried everything, axle grease, vaseline, 3in1 oil, motor oil, WD40.

Nothing would keep them from squeaking for more than an hour or so.

One day mom was pouring the bacon grease into the coffee can she kept under the sink, and the light went off.

I ran to the bathroom, grabbed a Q-tip, back to the kitchen to dip up some of the bacon grease and then down the hall to my room. I greased both of the wheels, and then closed the blinds, shut out the lights and closed the door. It didn't take long for the gerbils to wake up and get busy with gerbil stuff. Digging. Eating. Digging. Copulating. Digging. Eating. Digging.

And yes, running on the wheels.

Silence.

Not a sound save for the air as the exercise wheels spun around.

At last, peace was back in Racer's parent's home.

Well, sort of.

As soon as the gerbils discovered the tasty bacon grease the sound of their buck teeth grinding on the steel of the wheels could be heard. At least it was not as lound and obnoxious as the squeaking.

I don't care for them myself, but if they are put in front of me by the Master Chef (Mrs. Racer) I dare not decline to eat them.

So, I would be a vegan, if it wasn't for that tiny little detail.

Life can be so complex sometimes.

And some vegetarians don't. But for your standard, run-of-the-mill vegetarian, the rule tends to be, if you didn't have to kill it to eat it, you can eat it. Excluding vegetables, of course.
Well now here we go again.

Since it isn't hunting or fishing season all of the meat that winds up on my plate comes from the grocer or directly from the local rancher at a small butcher shop set up right there in front of the barns and the rancher's home. I didn't have to kill it to eat it, I guess that makes me a vegetarian.

I like being a vegetarian.

And a vegan.

And an omnivore.
