Rod, thank you! Somehow a more than modest sprinkling of likes has been bestowed upon me after my entry in this thread. I never thought that seeing the king (the one on the left) up close would amount to this wonderful, dare I say, almost royal welcome to this thread. And yes I have seen Parallax in action and do realize that his 'rule' is not bound by the boundaries of countries like mine and as such could potentially be more powerful than Willem-Alexander.

Parachutemax can (will?) correct correct me if I'm out of line, but cameras are OK to mention in this thread, as long as they don't have the live hicoR mark on them. As a K-5 owner, along with the camera that must not be named, I can confirm there is no mark that would shame it in this thread. When I went to primary school I used to like to anoy the teacher by literally applying rules like that that the teacher taught.


Anyway, I eventually discovered that this rule is not true, but I replaced it with one which is true:
"'I' before 'E' except after 'C' except where it is not."
Now that is a rule of spelling which is ALWAYS true.
It is not very useful because it does not give guidance which gets one right most of the time.


Also, it is a good example of a non-scientific statement: it cannot possibly be falsified because it is structured in a non-falsifiable form. That makes it useful in a research methods course I teach.
