There are a ton of studies in Social Psychology on how disguise leads to deindividuation and thus much less socially accepted behaviour. One study looked at 23 different indigenous societies around the world and found that in 15 of these warriors changed their appearance before battle - "90% of the time when victims of battle were killed, tortured, or mutilated, it was by warriors who had first changed their appearance and deindividuated themselves."

The internet pretty much works the same way:

I think it's the same in football. 90% of the tackles are made by players who put that black stuff under their eyes.
