I'm happy to say I never got caught by those. Never appealed to me for some reason. I guess the C64 filled that need
It was me so much me as it was the girl that I fancied at the time ... she was definitely addicted !!!

Expensive "puppy love" ... well, let's just leave it at that ...

The first computers I used in school were the Trash-80 Model III and 4 (they switched number schemes from Roman to Arabic). When we filled up our school-issued floppies (180 kilobytes!!!), we had to attach a cassette player to the machine (or the 'hacker' types would cut a notch and use the other side for 180K more!!!) The first PC I owned was an 8 MHz PC clone. My uncle thought I should buy a "hard drive" for it, but when was I ever going to need 10 megabytes of storage? (and the average lifespan of a hard drive in those days was a only a year or two anyhow.)

One of the many really cool features of this forum is that the editability of a member's posts never expires. I have used it many times.

It's the Grecian Formula. Does wonders.

I'm afraid the Mr. Rogers sweater doesn't help much though.

Getting Back to Nature

This post seemed appropriate to The Thread in that nothing is appropriate to The Thread, and it isn't appropriate anywhere else. Plus, we are falling behind for the 20K by 10/10 goal, and I'm trying to do my part. The post has been sanitized to remove photography-specific references.

I pulled out a certain slightly-older electronic device this weekend for a little quality time. The only problem: it wouldn't perform a certain 'auto' function. At all. I tried all the usual troubleshooting and cleaning steps you would expect - nothing. The problem seemed to be centered on the automatic/manual mode switch, and fiddling with the switch made no difference. Ever-so-slightly frustrated, I finally gave the switch a good thump with the heel of my hand, and everything immediately began working. I'm pleased to have solved the problem, but not happy with myself for resorting to beating on the thing like a litigious Crested Macaque.

OTOH, 'expertise' can be translated as 'knowing where to hit'...

My first PC was a PC-XT clone running at the blazing fast speed of 4.77 mhz. It had two 360kB floppies, no hard disk and 256kB RAM. The first upgrades were a 10MB hard disk, the original ST-412, and a 1200 baud internal modem. It got a cpu upgrade from the original Intel 8088 to an NEC V20, then I did my first overclocking by changing the crystal oscillator.

Until today, this is the only complete new PC I ever bought. And I still overclock

I'm going to the library now to work on my dissertation. Not that any of you really need to know this, but I'm doing my part to contribute to the great 20,000by1010 goal.

My first computer wan an Atari 800, I wrote surveying program for my ex-wife that her company wouldn't use when nothing else was available. "It's an Atari." Two years later HP came out with an on board system, that did everything without human input, from transit to plotter. It would have made my software obsolete anyway, but for two years, I coulda been a star.

Can anyone else here take selfies with their bare feet?
tip, it helps if you have arthritis and your toes are somewhat curled.
