I read of him in a book called Wide Body, a good read giving the history into the 747 market launch.

I might even have read something by him from the 50s period.

The engineering gene seems to have missed my generation, but my daughter heads a department for the former Defasco steel company in Hamilton Ontario, as an engineer. And my nephew did one of his degrees in nano technology, although he works where the money is, banking software. My other uncle that side of the family was one of the first 10 software engineers at IBM.

My grand mother used to say "you can be whatever you want if you get an education". But there does seem to be at least a bit of genetic pre-disposition.

As a second generation chemical engineer I know first hand that all of the traits that make up a good engineer would fill a graduate psychology course with little room for anything else. When those personality traits fit together properly you have a great engineer when they don't you can have a mess on your hands. I'm inconsistent, sometimes the great engineer and sometimes you'd best be behind concrete walls so I don't blow you up.


And no, I did not get a chemical engineering degree so I could operate a still, that's just a side benefit.

All this kind of ties into some philosophizing I did this weekend as the result of sitting at a traffic light next to a car blasting a profanity-laced song and thinking that if the "forbidden" stuff is commonplace, it becomes boring and stops being "special" - and then what will we use to swear with?

Yeah, I was thinking back to when Mom would ask "do you want to go to the car?" No. I did not want to go to the car. Going to the car was not a fun experience. My friends have said it to their kids, although their version just means sitting and being bored. I guess it's effective, as neither of their kids have become axe murderers - yet.

Heh. When we were "asked" about going out to the car or anywhere besides where our little butts were parked, we knew that the line had been crossed and we were going to suffer some consequences...

Or, "Don't make me stop this car!"


When one of my parents would get to that point we knew it was time to behave. As an adult I have often wondered, would they really have pulled over to the side of a busy road to spank us?

Mrs Rupert used to yank our two boys up and spank their little butts no mater where we were when they got out of control. Of course, that was long ago.....nowadays that would get you life in prison!

Yes, it is a shame how parenting has been restricted by those who do not have a better solution. Of course there is also those parents that clearly need a spanking themselves.

A 737-800. Maybe not *your* wing, but "yours" for that big corporate entity anyways I was pleasantly surprised at having enough legroom for a Seattle-DC nonstop that left me able to walk at the end (not frozen in place by too many hours in cramped seating...). Not sure if that's from the new aircraft, or just how Alaska specified their purchases...

(Just kidding. I did lots of materials subjects in my science degree via the neighbouring Engineering faculty. The engie students wore flannelette shirts and drank a lot, but had personality too.)
