I wonder why they use such a vile symbol?

The swastika started as a symbol of Buddhism - which is the link to vegetarianism in those restaurants. Also appears on many Buddhist temples, on the outside and also on many religious artefacts of various kinds. Not sure how widespread this is in Buddhism, but it is certainly common amongst the Chinese Buddhist groups I have seen.

I assume that the sign you saw is the ancient Hindu symbol of which the Nazi swastika is just an inverted version. Many Hindus traditionally don't eat meat

Hindu symbol would indicate it came out of India, not just the Chinese Buddhists.

One of the guys on my crew is a Hindu (actually, there are about a dozen Hindus from Fiji working throughout the 30 or so crews that work in the wing tool), born and raised in Fiji. He (they) only eats chicken or fish, and vegetables. When our manager springs for pizza or subs, catered appreciation feasts, and the holiday dinners, he has to be sure that the dietary preferences of everyone are considered.




One thing that confuses me though, is this guy will eat a donut, or have some pie, with ice cream.


Those things have butterfat in them.


Butterfat comes from cows.

Butterfat comes from milk, which can be obtained from a live and uninjured cow. Normal vegetarians will eat animal products like milk, just not the products that required disassembly.

I like chicken, pork and other vegetables.

I once read an anthropology book about Taiwan which referred to an expression: 'vegetables' to mean all the food that people ate with rice, some of which grew in the ground and some walked about. That expression came from the days LONG ago when most people out of poverty could very rarely afford meat.

It might have risen to prominence and spread through Buddhism, but the earliest evidence on the Indian subcontinent dates to about 3,000 BCE, long before Buddhism even existed. Today it is a prominent and important part of both Buddhism and Hinduism.
