Insect repellant's needed for some days, not so much when you're riding, but when you've stopped. And good repellant if March/sand flies are involved. :-)

Thankfully most are house or blow flies. Primarily annoying but not healthy on food, even though they do not eat much. But have you ever seen a blowfly kill a sheep. The sight is not one you want to see.

They seem to seek moisture, hence going for eyes, mouth, etc

They are just the ones you notice! When they are really bad, you can feel the weight of them on your back.

To answer that would get into banned P&R content.

The effect of the maggots in a sheep is very bad. They lay eggs in the wool, particularly in the crotch area, and the eggs turn into maggots and the maggots start to eat the flesh, to the extent that the sheep eventually dies. When the infestation is advanced the sheep has lost a large amount of skin and quite a bit of flesh. One of the best defences is to dock the tails of lambs, resulting in much cleaner crothches and less attraction to the flies to lay eggs.

This is enough gruesome stuff for those dining on bacon and cheese with accompaniment of ale. Tonight, Theakston XB. Pretty good first impression. I did have some cheese in dinner, but the meat was lamb.

Wikipedia indicates they have similar habits, maggots eating mammalian flesh, the pictures are quite different.

Most maggots don't eat live flesh, but that's small comfort if your sheep have one of the species that do.

Aren't they actually bees? Stingless bees? They were quite plentiful in the Kalahari.

Good description.

Little flies get in the mouth too, and I feel the same about them being there.
