Wow. Pigs and turkeys?
Your friend were upscale, compared to mine.

Rats and weasels? There were a few of those, too.

I'm sorry, I thought you were still talking livestock.

Can you get 50lb bags of Purina TeenChow?
I once sent an old ex-girlfriend a 50# bag of Purina Pig Starter when I heard she was pregnant. Her husband threatened my life over it but since I had whipped his butt several times beginning in grade school, he never delivered. She actually delivered a gorgeous little girl......and I assumed that she ate the Pig Starter herself?

I'm not like that anymore......but Otis is!

I think I have found the way to make my next $million. Pent-up turkey demand in NZ. IIRC, isn't NZ a little like the west coast of the U.S. only upside down?

Assuming you did want to buy one, what do they charge there by you? (For both the ahm and the turkey?) Always interested to see how much we're getting ripped off in this little country.
Prices vary since the stores sell whole turkeys as a "loss-leader" this time of year. I saw ads for fresh (not frozen) for $1.99 USD per pound for a 10-20 lb bird. A month ago, I paid $1.63/lb for a frozen 14 lb turkey, on sale. So the cost for a turkey feast is usually less than $25-$30. For comparison, quality fresh ground beef is about $4-$5/lb and a beef rib roast usually $10/lb or higher.

Oh, and I think for a thread full of people obsessed with food and food-like substances (Velveeta, surströmming etc.) it is absolutely mandatory we all get out our K-Non-3s and take pictures of our Christmas meals, then share them here for a nice collection of what people eat on the holidays around the globe!
Velveeta is not a food-like substance. It might have qualified as hazardous waste but I doubt it fits any classification by our local waste handling authorities.

Neither is surströmming. It's a chemical weapon.

True. And I have to admit that I would have a hard time deciding which one to ingest () if forced.

Not that I can imagine anything that could actually force me to do such a thing.

Oh, it's upside down alright! Especially when we pay too much for turkey!

I just checked the local ads, and a ham is between $0.77 and $1.99/lb, and a turkey between $0.99 and 1.49/lb.
Oh, we're being ripped off this side of the pond! Thanks for posting that.

Hubby bought this today. Price is 93 cents a lb. Unfortunately I can't eat this particular turkey since it has been shot up with stuff my neurologist and my other Doctor told me not to eat. Hubby tried to get an MSG free, non shot up turkey but he has vision problems and didn't see the small print. The labeling lies, one label says MSG free but the print on the wrapping says..... It's injected with 'turkey broth' which of course is 'processed turkey broth with msg added'. Ughhhhh, this is how I end up with 3 day migraines after eating stuff that was supposed to be free of additives. Why anyway does a turkey need an injection of turkey broth, that's just stupid. I can cook without help, lol. Really I can.
MSG or no MSG - I'd like to pay that for turkey!

I can usually get turkey $0.69-0.89/lb. Ham is more. Up to about $1.99/lb.

Interesting! We pay about the same for "ground beef" or as we call it, "beef mince". A roast - not much more. Rump steak is around $19 / kg right now, so about $9 / lbs, but usually that's a holiday price hike - prices normally about $13 / kg, so roughly $6 / lbs.
