225 miles up the road.
Maybe Aldis has the same problem I heard when I moved out to LA in '63 for a year...people asked if we still had trouble with the Indians? You have a lot of Indians around you place. Misconceptions abound in some places. They also asked a lot about my oil wells....like I was selling shoes in a shoe store in Reseda because I just liked it?

In HS (mid '60's) I had an exchange teacher from India for algebra, Mrs Williams.
She said that when she first came to the USA she thought thought "Indians" were still riding horses and 'cowboys" were fighting them.
This was from so many of our western shows on television in India.
As a side note, she was short, very short, due to this she was in front of a group of exchange teachers met by JFK, and got to shake his hand.
A whole semester and I never saw her wear the same colorful sari twice.

That is interesting too.....in LA some were very serious about the Indians and oil wells.

I had a next door neighbor that ran a little Howard Johnsons snack bar on the old turnpike between Dallas and Ft Worth. Elvis stopped in there for a sandwich and drink once and gave Corky his big cigar he was smoking as a tip. He wouldn't let us touch it...but we could look at it as he lit it up......that was my only closeness to fame back then.

Nowadays I have Otis and he gives me all his cigar butts.

Only getting the supermarket stuff here, I'm afraid. In Germany my family has fresh cow's milk delivered twice a week right from a farm, tastes much better, more 'creamy' and 'full'.

My cousin Susie has a milk cow. She has fresh milk every day.

When I was in my teens we had a couple of Jersey cows. Milked them by hand, twice a day.

I developed a strong grip.

Reached a point where there was more milk than we could consume, so mom sold it to friends and neighbors.

I loved it though. Fresh cream to make butter. Homemade whipped cream on homemade pie. Cream in my coffee or tea. Homemade cheese - way better than Velveeta. We skimmed most of the cream off of what was kept in the fridge to drink, but it still tasted a zillion times better that the stuff in the plastic jugs at the supermarket.

A lot of work though, and probably way more expensive than a trip to the corner grocery for a jug of white, milk flavored water filled with who knows what passed on from the overmedicated cows down at the local dairy factory farm.

I haven't had any goat milk in years! When I was 16 I had hepatitis A and had to watch anything with fat content for a couple of months. Goat milk became a regular staple. I got to like it, but haven't seen any around for years. You ever see it in stores?

I see it in the trendy hippie/yuppie granola crunching stores like Trader Joes. Sourced from local hobby farms.

And if you ask around at the local co-op store I bet they might know some in your area that have some for sale.

And back to cabovers.

In a cabover you will never see a view like this:

Nothing beats the feeling of watching the world go by with the view over a Hood.

Hoods rule.
I've never liked driving cabovers. Much prefer a truck with a hood!

Here in the UK supermarkets usually sell three varieties: full cream (blue), semi-skimmed (green) and skimmed milk (red). In a delusional state emerging from a mix of curiosity and health concerns I once actually bought the skimmed one. Poured myself a glass when I came home and it literally (not 'figuratively', as many use the word 'literally' nowadays, no, LITERALLY) tasted like water that had been coloured white. I hate wasting food, but I poured the rest of it into the drain. Undrinkable.

I'm with Ron Swanson on this:

Yes, however, it's the State Capital.
Welcome to Pierre, (pronounced "peer" I have no idea why. )set your watch back 30 years.
Many here on the forum are old enough to remember the show Green Acres. Many here in Pierre don't get the joke. They think it's a documentary.

Was considering it, but have to be careful. Universities are quite international, and you never know who's deciding on admissions. Imagine you send a carton of [lutefisk] and it's opened by an Italian?

True, he'd be wondering, "Why has he included with his application 18 cans of whale vomit?".

Aha. We never got Green Acres. So, similar size town to ours. We're no State Capital though!

Hey.

I guess I must be way off the beaten path.

The nearest Aldi to me is in Bakersfield, about 800 miles away.

Don`t feel too left out. Our Aldi is just a little bit bigger than the Block-busters we used to have, with less selection...
