Today, I went to town and inter alia bought a beer: "The Rev James Rye", contains barley, wheat and rye. Quite dark and hoppy. Intense flavour.

We have a by-election here at the moment. I saw one of the candidates: Larry Sanders. He sound like an American, and he has a brother who was on TV in America the last time I was there, earlier this year.

It was rainy about mid day today. Cleared a bit later and then there was a stronger wind and it rained again, more heavily.

Here is an expression I hear on the 'shipping forecast' (about weather in the waters around UK) "moderate to good, sometimes poor". Took me a while to work out that that is formal language for saying "we have no idea what the weather will be so we cover all possibilities".

The one I'll always remember for the rest of my life is when the weather guy sagely informed us that the chance of rain was 50%. So in other words... it might, or it might not...

Seriously, I think expressing it in percentage of probability is CYA for the weatherguessers. They just change the percentages to make it less obvious that they have no more idea than the man on the street what the weather will be.
"<insert percentage> chance of rain today."
If it rains: "See? I predicted there was a x% chance of rain."
If it doesn't rain: "See? I told you there was only a x% chance of rain.

I don't fault anyone for not being able to forecast the weather.
I can't forecast the weather myself; but I don't collect a paycheck for pretending that I can, like weatherguessers do.

I predict the weather all the time.

Accurately.

Having lived in the Great Pacific Northwet continuously for over 46 years, 50 years total, I have a very good feel for the weather patterns. We have two seasons. Summer. Rainy.

Summer is usually mild, and slightly dryer than Rainy. Sometimes the temps will climb beyond the comfortable 75 to 85 degree norm, even topping triple digits, but it is often shortlived. This year I don't think it got higher than 92 or so, and only for a couple days.

In fact, this year's Summer was cooler and more moist than usual.

So I'm thinking we are gonna have a real Winter this year. Snow, and everything.

Rainy season is always longer than Summer, covering what other folks call Autumn, Winter and Spring. It doesn't really rain all the time, but it does keep the West side of the Cascades very green.

The rain forest on the Olympic Peninsula gets around 137" a year. Seattle more like 38". State precipitation record for 1 year is Wynoochee Oxbow, western Washington, 1931, 184.56". State snow record for 1 season - Mount Baker, northern Washington, 1998-1999, 1140.0" (95 feet, U.S. record).

Where I live (in the Cascade foothills) we get around 47" of rain annually.

As I mentioned, the Summer was short, damp and cool. Autumn is stomping in quite forcefully, with cooler than usual temps and more cloudy, rainy days than not.

We will have Winter this year, and there will be snow.

Lots of snow.

And it's gonna stick around.

Mark my words.

Last week I saw a report, after it happened, that Typhoon Megi left 38" of rain at Ilan, NE Taiwan coast, in a couple of hours. I also saw pictures of some town in Taiwan with water nearly to the top of the ground floor filling up the street.

When I was young we teenagers had a weather forecast: "Light during the day and dark at night." Never wrong, but not very useful either.

What annoys me even more than % prediction of rain is the investment commentators % prediction of recession (or something else) by the end of the year. Does that mean I buy or hold my couple of small parcels of shares?

Some years ago there was a big drought in Australia, for a few years. I noticed that the weather people were always predicting rain for about two or three days forward in Adelaide, which always vanished when the right day arrived. I think that was a conspiracy to get people to not water their gardens.

I see there is some concern about the pace this thread is growing. Let me offer my humble contribution with two pictures from my favorite food shop to steer you guys to some familiar territory...food!

Some delicious sausages with cheese in the background.

And some bottles of shoe polish.....eh wine! I bought a good bottle of chablis, some cheese and got a free, small, french cheese from a very nice lady serving me.
