Besides, he was not the first European to get over there. Never mind the Greenlanders/Icelanders, they went there, but left again. But don't try and tell me the Portuguese weren't first. They probably visited Newfoundland before Colón got his butt in motion, but most definitely they had visited South America. Going south to explore Africa (as they started doing early in the 15th century) it's highly unlikely that the currents didn't carry them to South America at some point. And the Treaty of Tordesillas from 1494 placed Brazil in the hands of the Portuguese. Hardly a coincidence.
