I'm completely guessing here, but I think it may be the French influence. If not, we certainly have a lot of coincidental similarities to French in a number of spelling and language aspects...

To me, US spellings often seem simplified - and I mean that in a positive way...

Rugby Union, played by gentlemen masquerading as thugs
and Rugby League, played by thugs living their dream of being thugs.

And remember that Tim60 is really an Aussie so his tendency will be to call the 'world game' soccer, to distinguish it from real (Aussie Rules) football.

Although over the last few years the soccer authorities here are insisting their game be called football also.
So Sydney FC play soccer, and Sydney Swans Football Club play football!!

Soccer is one of those words we learned during our youth which name things properly. Many of those words are now banned as not politically correct.

At least soccer is not yet banned for such reasons, although our other name for that game would be because it incorporated a word now banned for naming something else. That name had to o with our view that soccer players were rather soft because they did not have things like scrums in their game, and fall over and want free kicks just because an opponent runs near their shadow.

I did not know about rigby

nor those fine distinctions about rugby nor the dispute down under

tim 60 is not ided by the Aussie flag

is he sailing under false colours ? (Note the intentional mis spelling of the word color )

I got exiled. When I wanted a particular kind of job there was no where in Australia that had one, at a suitable rank, available. There were a few in US, and I got close to a couple of those, and then got one over here in UK. BTW: not sure how people here would respond if you pronounced that as a word (to rhyme with 'yuk') rather than spelling it out.

Why be a nihilist and not use what is in our alphabet, leading to deleting it from the alphabet. Taking that to the extreme we would take away all the letters and end up unable to communicate in writing, and I suppose that would lead to poverty for lawyers because their services as authors would cease to exist and there would be no documents for them to argue about. They would need to specialise in things like rapes and murders where the subject matter is tangible, even is ephemeral with consequences.

Rigby was a now defunct publisher, bookshop and stationary chain in Australia when I was young.
