I had previously seen them on farms, some 10 years earlier, but had no idea they still existed in the 1980's.
I never encountered any myself but I seem to recall that some of the farmers in the early 60's had one according to the kids I went to elementary school ( K - 6 ) with

Pretty desolate place. I don't even see poles with wires in street view.

I do see outhouses by some of the houses though. Guess indoor plumbing is a luxury most there cannot afford.

I can remember our house being on a party line in the 1950's.

Remember party lines? Well hell yeah!
You could pick up, quietly, and listen to a "private" conservation.
Nowadays there's no need to pick up, they can be heard at the grocery store, mall, gas station, etc., although one sided.

Yes. it's basic. Not many places like that left.

I walked into the local (basic) shop and asked for a pay phone. This was in the days before mobile phones. The proprietor pointed around the corner. I went around the corner but could find no appliance that looked like a pay phone. Walked back to shopkeeper and explained that I could not find pay phone. He directed me back around the corner to where there was an antique thing on the wall complete with a little wringer handle - no conventional circular dial or push buttons. I was back at his counter seconds later and explained that he'd have to show me how to work the thing. He did.

You twirled the handle a few times and a woman who sounded like she was on the moon asked you what number you wanted. You gave the number and she asked how long you wanted to talk. I believe I replied: "Well that depends on whether someone answers or not." Anyway, she told me to give a certain amount of money to the shopkeeper which I did and she made the call. When the person on the other end answered she told them to hold and told me the call was connected and I could speak. Very strange experience.

We still have one, kind of, it's VoIP.

I bought a landline service because that is how I get the broadband internet, with unlimited data for a sensible amount of money, and signal reliability. The mobile phone provider allows unlimited data used on the phone but only 4G p/m tethered to another device, and stops using the SIM installed directly in a non-phone device.

Does anyone know an iPhone App that allows me to tether but makes it look to my phone provider like I am using the data on my phone? Cannot imagine that would be very hard to write for a software writer.

To my internet service that comes with a landline number, and is priced in two bits, I have never connected a conventional landline phone, but I have connected a VOIP phone from a provider in Australia so I get PSTN numbers in Australia charged as an Australian local call.

Most of my voice calls are to my contacts in WhatsApp or Line, a similar but nicer interface service.
