My dad was a gun captain of one of the 16" guns on a battleship in WWII. We always had to badger him to take us to fireworks displays. He would usually sleep in the car. We once asked him why he did that. He said that if you have ever seen a nighttime air attack on a fleet of over 200 naval vessels, a fireworks display is just not worth the effort to see.
I recently came across this video on YouTube. It is the USS Washington (the ship my father served on) firing at aircraft. The big flashes are the 5" guns and the tracers are 20 and 40mm antiaircraft guns. The tracers are only every 4th of 5th round too. Skip to the 4 minute mark.
The US Navy photographed just about everything in WWII. A lot of it in color too. Moderators, If this is not appropriate please delete the video.
