I'll add that cooking something like hot dogs, burgers, or steaks is not barbecue, it's grilling.
Barbecuing is cooking a lower temps for longer periods of time, usually with wood for smoke.
^ that's something I was saying as well, before watching some documentaries on US barbecue competitions.
Here in Italy it's common to call the the physical implement, the fired-bricks structure, a "barbecue", even though we grill on it.
I guess we can be partly excused because "barbecue" is a loan word to us, but we do say "alla griglia", and by that we mean "grilled", so...
