Thank you!

Some people would ask me if I did it that way to save money, and I always have to say no. The first few I built cost $800 to $1,000 to build, not including software. The last few have been $1,000 to $1,200.

Those people recoil at the prices I quote them to build one, and of course I have to add on something for the software and my time to build it to the numbers above.

They say they can get a computer at Best Buy or WalMart for $200 to $300.

So I tell them I have machines that will do what I want them to do, only the software on them I want, configured to operate well. And WalMart or Best Buy don't sell that.

But hey, Best Buy has the Geek Squad.

Way back I remember peoples saying computers were getting cheaper for the performance but noticed that the new sw demanded more performance so one still had to pay the same for an entry level machine. It was about Windows 7 that was the first upgrade os that left the machine faster than it was with the previous os. In the past 5 to years I have found the cheap shops selling entry level machines which are perfectly good for the average home user email and browsing and occasional letter need at very cheap prices. The prices of solid performance machines seems to remain just like before, which I suppose means the real cost has decreased. And for those with special needs and money to support it the top end has extended to some really interesting capabilities.

Clearly you want machines that do not fall foul of one of my ug lecturers phrases "many days and no useful work".

Youtube rocks....even though I have been in the industry for almost 40 years, I worked mainly on mainframes. When it comes time to replace the keyboard or screen on one of my kids laptops, youtube is where I go. Usually it is quite straightforward.
Yep.

I made a loaf of beer bread yesterday.
Breakfast was a thick slice browned in butter then topped with honey and crumbled bacon.
It was good, very good.

He also played several styles of music and you could see the joy in his face when he did. I wonder who he is "a pickin and a grinnin" with now? Awesome entertainer.

Any time I buy a machine from the store, the first thing I do is wipe it and re-install the software....hate bloat-ware

Are there any mainframes still running?
Not really the way it used to be. There are still "huge" mainframe-type supercomputersaround for doing really complex scientific stuff, but the traditional datacenter is now packed with row upon row of blades....a blades is basically a card with many cores and memory on-board and a box that may contain many of these blades. The operating system would be a virtual OS hosting many 1000s of instances of windows or lInux. Each instance might be a application, a part of an application, a database server, etc. The rest of the datacenter is filled with UPS units (Uninterrupted Power Supply) and disk farms.

And of course, every office area has at least one printer
