Actually, I do have a temporary disability policy (part of the union negotiated benefit package) that pays about $300 a week, primarily to keep the medical insurance active, and provide a modest amount of cash to help out. I have applied for, and will be receiving it for the duration after a two week waiting period.
But.
I need to stay on paid status, so I don't lose seniority (this is not a work related injury), and to avoid having to dip too deeply into my savings to meet the monthly bills. Also, my retirement savings account only gets money put into it if I'm on paid status, receiving a paycheck.
But the pay is all sick leave and vacation pay, not regular earnings, so none of it counts towards the hours worked that are used to compute the sick leave and vacation accrual, so I won't be earning any addition sick leave or vacation pay until I go back to something where I will be earning regular pay again.
And that is part of my plan.
The vacation pay should be exhausted around January 4. I am going to ask the company for a light duty assignment on January 2, when they start back up again after the holiday break. We get paid (another union negotiated benefit) Christmas day through January 1 holiday pay, weekends excluded, and the factory shuts down, so being on paid status I also get the holiday pay, which reduced how much of my vacation pay I burn up. Hopefully they can accommodate my temporary disability and place me somewhere that supports the build, but considers my limitations.
I doubt I will be even close to 100% before May or June.
Two years ago the left foot took 8 months and then I did several more months of modified duty.
