Yeah, that fancy open air roof doesn't handle rain too well

Monday.

Ugh!

Just finishing breakfast and the daily cup of coffee, then I will hobble out to the car on crutches and make the 32 mile journey to the Big Shed for another fun filled day of restricted duty.

Yay.

"Restricted duty" - sounds like some kind of jail you are going off to. And a privately run, for profit, one at that too.

Oh, and my wife still is in Zimbabwe. She sent me message that fuel prices had near trebled over night and that there is some unrest as a result. The reason given for the price hike is to "remedy fuel shortages"... All is quiet where she stays, though. Always good get notice before it hits the news (which it has).

Might be they shut down social media as well, but I'd be surprised if they shut down the mobile networks for any extended time. I just hope the situation doesn't make travelling too difficult.

Sounds like there is a Keynesian economist over there.

BTW: why do we call the economist Keynes (pronounced Canes) and the town Milton Keynes (pronounced Milton Keens).

Ah, writing it like that makes it clear the town is named after the brand of mustard powder. Continues a theme over here of all those towns named after rich foreigners' soccer businesses.

The best of luck to her...we are a little worried about our travelling over the next few weeks as US airport security is impaired by reduced manpower.
Thanks, all is well with her the last I heard. I see that there were some violent protests resulting in several people killed last night, but nothing too widespread. I hope things will settle down. Zimbabweans have had more than their fair share of trouble over the years.

Good to see you have reached your, umm, sunny destination, at least

There used to be a big market for ice - even in Canada. I know Norway exported around half a million tonnes of ice each year around the end of the 19th century. One of the small lakes/ponds near home is still named the Ice Dam, and there is a contraption on the shore for hauling ice blocks.

Icecutters near Toronto

(Stolen from Wikipedia - no, the image, not the ice)

BBC reports are a bit unsettling. "Zimbabwe opposition office torched. Several people have been killed and hundreds arrested following violent protests." Several of the employees at my wife's hotel couldn't get to work so I guess there are some road blocks, too. Things have been perfectly calm around the hotel, though, and it's not too far to the airport so getting there oughtn't be too difficult. It will be good to get her home anyway
