Me too.

As an adult I have only lived in rural or semi rural homes.

My current home is the most rural to date. Thirty miles to the nearest hospital which is located in the nearest large city (Everett, Washington, population 103,000 in 2010). I have the Cascade Mountains right out my door, a 15 minute drive away. Hiking, camping, skiing, kayaking, hunting are just a few of many activities

I live 10 miles from the nearest major hospital. You can probably get to yours faster than I can, even in a meat wagon.

Yes it is.

Each cast was on for two weeks. Prior to that there were three splints, each for one week.

Did the nursing staff who changed the casts wear gas masks?

No.

How does the foot feel?

Like a foot.

Actually it is doing pretty good. Still a little sore in all the places that were worked on, but nowhere near the level of discomfort from the first few weeks post surgery.

How long now before you can put weight in the foot?

One week from today I can begin to start adding a little weight, whilst using crutches for carrying most of the weight. By that time I see the surgeon for another follow up visit.

Based on the experience two years ago with the left foot, there will be another couple of weeks of gradual increases to weight bearing. I expect to be using the boot for about six weeks.

They are about the same.

Actually it doesn’t reek as badly as the left foot did two years ago. Back then the left foot got so rank that I could smell it when standing.

Not sure why it was worse back then, although I have made major changes to my diet and my physical health is much better now than it was two years ago.

Today is seven weeks post surgery. Had a follow up with the surgeon, the second of two casts was removed, and I went home wearing a "cast boot" which is every bit as rigid as a cast, but I can remove it.

And wash my foot and leg from the knee down.

And it is time.

No weight bearing just yet though, but I can begin working on flexibility.

So now I must go wash my stinky foot and begin the process of moisturizing the dead skin away.
