Actually Mark, knowing that you have a passion for cycling (and spandex, lycra, whatever) I would imagine that you would be one of the long lived retirees. It seems to be the folks with nothing to do that seem to have the problem. But maybe I am talking out of my backside. I have many things to keep me active, sane, and hopefully out of the grave. I have seen the folks you are speaking of but I also see the other bunch as well. Two good friends, both very active, retired in their 50s and they are both going strong 10 years later.

Statistically I'd think more of the daisy pushing part of the population were retirees... But I also know people working hard - hunting for the final heart attack.

No, I'm with Charlie. The best hope I have for a long life is to stop working. Yet, I need those paycheck. This week I'll be one paycheck closer to the end

Oh, and I'm not greedy. I'll settle for the same life span as my grandma. She got to 99 (missed 100 by 111 days) and lived by herself up until the very last week. Yeah, I can settle for that.

Jim Fixx, avid runner and author (the best selling 1977 book The Complete Book Of Running) was the perfect picture of health.

He died of a heart attack while jogging at 52 years of age.

meh what will keep me working is the prospect of living as long as my dad. he will be 92 april 7th, still golfs, only started using a cart last year when the club awarded him free use ( which will probably speed his demise) he is slowing down now though . but if i retired at 62 like he did i would be living on handouts and cat food by 92 ...

also,
proof a bit of exercise is good for longevity. as long as heart disease not in your genetic makeup

I hope you're right Charlie.

The thing about retiring when you're in your fifties is: How do you afford a great lifestyle into your eighties / nineties? (Unless you had some very well paying job) It's a long time to be retired! I hope to find the balance and work less and play more. Cycling helps, so I'll keep doing that until I fall off the bike!

Gee thanks! There's only two places I'd like to die. Both are described as "in the saddle".

I know that i will look for alternate part-time work when I retire (and maybe put more energy in focus into art shows so I do more than break even ) ..i am building some business for headshots and like for people who need them among my group of friends... not a massive income generator but it would be nice to have photography pay all it's costs in retirement. If we move to the east coast as we are considering that will be harder, in the city i have the benefit of a varied and large arts scene

I retired from surveying at age 56, did a few side things (all legal, I know you guys) for income for a few years.
Started drawing SS at 62, so it's 10 years now getting it.
Mrs Bob worked until she was 65 & 9 months. She'll be retired 2 years in a couple of months, and we're still on speaking terms.

Typical. The first time I’ve been to Toronto for 20 years and there will be huh-yuge snow tomorrow and Wednesday. And I’ll be out amongst the Toronto drivers!!

Still, 66 and counting on Wednesday, and no thoughts yet of full retirement. Although many people say that being self-employed is semi-retirement anyway...

Decided to apply for a job Saturday and have an interview tomorrow AM so maybe I can afford a better brand of bacon soon! I need to get out of the house and earn rather than spend money.
