I don't think that's how it works...

Actually Mark, knowing that you have a passion for cycling (and spandex, lycra, whatever) I would imagine that you would be one of the long lived retirees. It seems to be the folks with nothing to do that seem to have the problem. But maybe I am talking out of my backside. I have many things to keep me active, sane, and hopefully out of the grave. I have seen the folks you are speaking of but I also see the other bunch as well. Two good friends, both very active, retired in their 50s and they are both going strong 10 years later.
XC skiing on a regular basis is one of the best things to do for your health, it's exercises your full body and is gentle on the joints, I've seen many octogenarians skiing along. 'Jackrabbit' Johannsen, one of the best known XC skiers, lived and skied into his 12th decade.

Retiring from what kid?
Playing with goats?
Skiing?
Wearing a skirt and driving people nuts with your pipes?

Let's start with the pipes. The rest can come later...

A British Earl returns home to find his wife in bed with the gardener. He turns to his Butler and says quietly, "James, fetch my fowling piece.
James returns with the Earl's shotgun, the Earl takes careful aim, BOOM!
James declares, "Oh good shot sir, ever the sportsman, you got him on the rise!"

He died of a heart attack while jogging at 52 years of age.
Illustrating , yet again, the mortality rate of those who live a healthy lifestyle is exactly the same as those who don't.

When I was in the IBEW Local 77 they published the results of some study that was done regarding age at retirement and life expectancy. It stated the statistically those who retired at around 60 died by age 70, and those who waited until 65 died in their late 80’s or even late 90’s.

That sounds about right from my observations.

I think the people who retire as soon as they can are disaffected with work and carry the same attitude to many other things in life. I have a couple of friends who have retired from their regular job but taken up other interests which they pursue like a self-employed business. For example, the one who got into socially motivated (for reasons of faith) venture capital, with all the regular rigour of venture capital, just differently defined objectives.

I hope you're right Charlie.

The thing about retiring when you're in your fifties is: How do you afford a great lifestyle into your eighties / nineties? (Unless you had some very well paying job) It's a long time to be retired! I hope to find the balance and work less and play more. Cycling helps, so I'll keep doing that until I fall off the bike!
Both of my friends had good paying jobs and no kids....and they both do odd jobs now that they are retired; which is what I plan on doing as well. I just want do get away from my current high stress job before it kills me
