To be fair, we don't live in the land of the midnight sun, but the rainy (and sometimes snowy) season runs from October to April, so it is mostly cloudy here then.

I did see the sun today, for about ten minutes.
Yep, those clouds eat a lot of light (nomnom), and the sun stays low for the few hours it's peeking over the horizon.

But hey, the sun is now up for more than twice as long a day as what it was at winter solstice - almost 10 hours today! And at midday it will be 20 degrees above the horizon - as opposed to 7° end of December.

And if it hadn't been cloudy we could even have had a glimpse of it...

Kind of fumy that you had a company based on the East coast supply the snow melting machine!
Actually there are only a couple of companies that make snowmelting machines, and Trecan is the big one, selling and leasing them worldwide.

I don’t know if the owners of the Big Shed are buying or leasing.

I got a close look at the one here yesterday, it is a 80-PD model. Here is a lousy iPod shot of it in action.

The iPod photo makes the snow pile look smaller than it is, but notice the light poles sticking out of it.

That should give a sense of scale.

Our city has a bigger one to clean out the nasty stuff before dumping the melt water in the fjord. It has the capacity to receive two truckloads at a time and melt 500-1,000 m³ (17,500-37,000 cu ft) an hour. They pump up seawater with which to melt the snow, so the warmer the water the quicker it melts. At about 25m down the temperature is fairly high (8-10°C at the start of winter, down to about 4 in March).

So the US one burns stuff to get the heat while the Norwegian one uses heat that is in something in nature already.

Here we leave the snow and after a while it goes away, and in Australia we got by without ever getting the snow at all.

Sunny day today, complete with a few thin white clouds and bluishness in the sky and hard shadows on the ground. And the gold course looks green.

Green gold?

Must not be very high quality, as it is tarnished when it turns green.

The Norwegian one still burns stuff (or needs a land-cable for power) to pump water, crunch ice, and cleaning the waste water. But yeah, at least they save some energy for the melting part of it.

It's a bit too much to just leave for spring to take care of, and dumping it in the fjord (as we used to do) is unhealthy for marine life. Depositing it on land causes accumulation of the same unhealthy substances - and takes up quite a bit of space.

Personally I prefer the Australian way, though.

By the way, The Sun went down here sometime last October, and won’t make another appearance until April.
It gets stupid cold here in Ontario but at least we get a good dose of sunshine all winter long. I do like my sunshine

Hey gang.
A rough couple of days for me, gastro troubles, upper and lower, I won't go into details..............you're welcome.
December was my head smashing fall, January was my nearly 2 week respiratory deal, can't wait to see what March brings.

In other news, bacon prices here in the USA are the lowest in a decade, something about tariffs, but we won't go into that.
Get well soon Bob....and have a perfectly hassle-free March!!

Wow, quite the operation....sunshine and summer is our only melting solution....although zoning for disposal sites has become a prickly discussion recently

Thanks Charlie, thought I was pretty much over it, but several trips to the loo this morning tells me otherwise.

Those are beneficial trips, gotta get rid of the evil that lurks within.
