On that note, in my recipe hunting activities I recently came across a Southern American "delight" that I vaguely remember hearing of, but never knew what it was:

The "Ambrosia Salad".

The recipe I read was as follows:

1 (8 oz.) tub of whipped topping, thawed
1 cup sour cream
1 (20 oz.) can pineapple tidbits, drained well
1 (15 oz.) can mandarin orange segments, drained well
1 cup red or green seedless grapes, sliced in half
1 1/2 cups sweetened coconut flakes
1 1/2 cups mini marshmallows
1 (10 oz.) jar of maraschino cherry halves, drained very well (optional)
1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

Now, I like to consider myself a culturally broad- and open-minded individual, but where the heck does that come off as a salad??!

I love the USA... I've had many a good time there, I have respect for its constitution and especially for its peoples... but please, someone, tell me where whipped topping and marshmallows figure in a "salad"??
Leave out the marshmallows and I'm all over it.

Oh, I agree. In fact, I could even accept a mini marshmallow or two on occasion.

But... but... SALAD?!?

I kid you not.

That actually sounds good, except for the tomatoes; unless they were home grown, that is. I can't remember the last time I had a commercially grown tomato that wasn't the texture of an apple and the flavor of a glass of water.

Nice

What did you have for the main course?

EDIT: I'm a fine one to talk... Today was the first day where it felt right to have a good, old-fashioned chopped salad for lunch. Nothing fancy, just chopped ham, lots of lettuce, scallions (spring onions / green onions / whatever you folks call 'em), tomatoes, sliced egg. After the winter months and accompanying food, it was a refreshing change
BBQed chicken....I know I know, crazy eh? And with snow still on the ground.

Good morning all. Looks like Mrs CharLac has been hit by a chest cold and I am feeling crummy this morning as well after no sleep last night from midnight till three. That said, I am at work and gung ho to perform as many miracles as possible. On the good news front, it looks like we are going back to Mexico in May to treat the kids to a week of sunshine, poolside relaxation, and maybe even a deep sea fishing outing; something my 19 year old son has been dreaming about since he was four and a half. It will be rather hectic as the weekend following our return is our Algonquin trout fishing weekend so it will be a crazy 10 days strung together. First world problems. Well, time to hit that inbox. I only eat fresh tomatoes in the local season....buy them directly from farmers, ...i eat masses of them then and when the san marzanos hit i can a couple of bushels for the years cooking. I will eat cherry tomatoes in salads etc because they frequently come from local greenhouses and have some flavour
but pink baseballs nope no thanks

That's the only ones we buy during the off season.
In the summer we grow our own slicers and cherry tomatoes.

Thanks Charlie.

Actually the fireplace is just an ordinary propane unit. Living in the foothills of the Cascades there isn’t natural gas available. And I didn’t want the mess and fuss af a wood burner. So I bought a 500 gallon propane tank and buried it out back.

The JennAire cooktop also burns propane, so when the power is out we have warmth and can cook (and also heat up water to bathe with).

The hearth and mantle are pretty cool though.

The hearth is Pennsylvania blue slate.

The mantle is rocks Mrs. Racer 2.0 and I picked from the riverbed of the river the house sits next to.

It is capped by a (slightly) live edge chunk of maple I picked out at a local lumber yard.
