But yours is a dry heat.
It gets pretty windy out there on the prairie.

So, a dry, windy, furnace like heat.

That's how they get the grain so golden brown.

Probably why they boil ribs there, otherwise they dry out too much on the grill.

One day in February, 1999 the news reported that Pierre was the coldest city in the lower 48 that particular day. I don't remember the exact temperature, it was twenty-something below. That, in and of itself, isn't all that remarkable but later that year there was a day in late July that we were the hottest city in the nation.
If you polled a few hundred people at random as to what they considered "habitable" I'm pretty sure we would just barely qualify.

My wife will confirm that! She says I've elevated whining to an artform.

You'd have to go outside of SD to get enough people for your poll.
Maybe add ND, and MT?

How about a record high and low in the same day for Springfield, MO?
11/11/1911, nearly the same for the St Louis area.

"In Springfield, the effects of the front were even more dramatic. Afternoon temperatures had reached record high levels by 2:00 to 3:00 pm when the mercury reached 80 degrees. South winds increased to a sustained 30 mph with gusts over 40 mph. The wind shifted to the northwest at 3:45 pm dropping the temperature to 40 degrees by 4:00 pm. The temperature continued to plummet to 20 degrees by 7 pm. Finally by midnight, a record low of 13 degrees was established. The temperature fell to 9 degrees above zero during the early morning hours on November 12th. November 11, 1911 marks the only day in the Springfield, Missouri climate record where a record high and low temperature exist on the same day."

One day in the not-too-distant future, we'll have to colonise the moon and/or Mars. Us Brits will have a dreadful time, but you guys... you'll take it in your stride

One of the branches of my family tree overhangs England, and another, Scotland.

A person could take that two ways; but I'm sure you meant it only one way.
