Why is Memorial Day at this date.

We have 11/11 and home has 25/4 because they commemorate particular major days of history.

I just stepped outside to put a few things in the recycling bin, and two small bats passed right by my head in quick succession - no more than two or three feet away. They're doing wide circuits of the garden and feeding on all the insects from what has been a pleasant day with temperatures around 19.5C / 67F. They regularly visit my garden during the Summer months. I stood for about five minutes watching them circling, diving and climbing. Cute little things... I didn't know until recently, they can live for a surprisingly long time - 30 years plus, and there are recorded cases of 40+. Amazing for such small animals, especially when you consider similar-sized rodents only live three years or so...

Sadly, many bats in North America are suffering and dying from a fungus called white nose syndrome.
Two quotes from Wiki:
"As of 2012 white-nose syndrome was estimated to have caused at least 5.7 million to 6.7 million bat deaths in North America."
"It is estimated that bats save farmers in the U.S. 3 billion dollars annually in pest control services."

Not suffering from white nose syndrom, but rather too long working weeks. Some work planned for tomorrow as well.

Oh well, I do get paid.

Found: half of a beef brisket in the downstairs freezer, date frozen Oct. 2017
The challenge: slow smoke it and make it not only edible, but also tasty.
Challenge accepted.
Honest results will be posted after it's had a fridge thaw and a long slow smoke cook.

Chef Parallax's tip of the day:
Boil it first. It will be tender and juicy.
You're welcome.

That's very sad I read that wiki article... strange that the fungus is found in Europe, but doesn't seem to be affecting our bats - especially considering the colder climate in much of this part of the world

Does it have much in the way of freezer burn, Bob? If not, it might not need much more than your usual approach(es) for delicious results In any case, slow smoking and long cooking should make for tasty and tender meat...

This might get rid of the white-nose syndrome, but will almost certainly render the bats deceased. They will be "ex bats", to use Monty Python terminology.

Oh, wait... you were talking about Bob's brisket, right?

Bummer.

I have always liked bats. I have a Rupert story, but I also need to find the slides, set up the bellows and the A50 and K-1, copy and process them, and upload to my Flickr so I can use them to illustrate.

Soon, my fellow Pentaxians, soon.

So it is dusk there then?

I too enjoy watching them as they come out. Interesting to note they flap their wings almost constantly, any gliding being for a very short distance when they change direction.
