Unless you've eaten camel before, how would you know?

"Hey, sewer rat may taste like pumpkin pie, but I'd never know 'cause I wouldn't eat the ...... ............"

I'd imagine that sewer rat will taste like any other rat, apart from the "different" marinade And cane rat does not taste like pumpkin pie. At least I think it was cane rat. Cane rat that had eaten crops only, I'm sure

But I'm fairly certain camel will taste camel even if I haven't tasted it

"Camel tastes delicious. It’s more tender when the camel is slaughtered at a young age and drier when the camel is older. Some say it tastes like a cross between lamb and beef, but the taste will also depend on which cut of the camel meat is eaten – the fatty hump or other parts."

If it tasted like cane rat, that's probably what it was

Given that your culinary experiences have included rats, have you ventured so far as to try any cooked insects yet? There's a fair bit of talk in the media right now of how they'll likely become an important global food source...

Yep. Although, I still prefer beef from animals with cloven hooves. Gemskbok is nice. Wildebeest too. Neither of which taste like chicken - at all.

One thing I haven't had the opportunity to taste yet is warthog bacon. I bet it tastes a lot like bacon

Am having some chili (beef) biltong right now, some leftovers from the trip.
Gemsbok is lovely. Kudu too. Even nicer as biltong. Wildebeest is ok, but can be a bit tough.
I've had giraffe steaks - very good. And warthog, but I've never had warthog bacon. Warthog is a lot more read meaty than pig.
Crocodile is good too, almost like a cross between chicken and pork.

And, I really miss ostrich biltong. Yum!!!

Thanks for clearing that up, Bob. Ever since the camel BBQ post, I've been hemming and hawing over the free-range camels in Aldi's meat aisle. Next time I shop, I'll skip the gemsbok and kudu and give it a try...

Sure. When I buy my camel meat, I want it to be from a happy camel. Not something raised in crowded captivity, but one that enjoyed a short but fulfilling life... roaming hundreds, maybe thousands of square miles of... featureless, arid dunes... with nothing but sand as far as the eye can see...

On second thoughts, maybe I'll just go for barn-reared camel

Next you'll be telling me about camel eggs.

A bit of inside info for you... they're not eggs. Do not eat under any circumstances. Dry them out and use them for campfires Or, eat them, but carry mouthwash...

For exotic meats, my Aldi only carries unicorn and dodo birds.

I suspect my Aldi carries all sorts of strange exotica, though it's typically labelled as beef, pork, lamb, chicken etc. - probably to save printing a whole bunch of new labels each time...

On a related note, does anyone here know how to remove the scales from a leg of pork?

You have to take the hooves and the beak off first.
