We're not world travelers, and I'm not that smart, here's my question:
When Mrs Bob goes to Scotland and England this fall she won't have cell service, so.........
Can we stay in contact via text when she has a wifi connection?
I'm guessing FB messenger would work. I know, Eww!
One word Bob.

FaceTime.

International roaming on the cell phone.

Your cell carrier should be able to allow you to add it to your plan (for a additional monthly fee of course), and when she returns, call them and have it removed.
You have to pay extra for the privilege of paying ridiculous international roaming fees? Your carriers are even worse than ours

Ok, within the EU (with friends, such as us) the roaming fees are gone, but going elsewhere in the world can be quite expensive still.

Besides, you can make video calls with Whatsapp, too. But you don't have to.

I may be missing the point here, and I can't find Bobs original comment to respond to, but when She Who Must Be Obeyed (SWMBO} went to the UK last year she just bought a local SIM card and some credit on it and put the card in her phone. Skype will let you set up an "local" number to your home that when you call it transfers you to a foreign number and all you pay is the connection to the local number.

For example, SWMBO has a local to us number for her mum in Scotland, and I had a local to us number for a colleague in Wales that I had to call regularly.

Skype will permit video calls or voice only (depends on your internet speed, sometimes voice is the best option} and at the end fo the trip Mrs Bob can ditch the UK SIM card and put her old one back in the phone.

ALDI in the UK do some good SIM card deals

So, Whittakers' marketing is like Pentax's?

Oh, must wash my mouth out with BACON.
If Whittakers fired their entire marketing department they'd still sell more chocolate than Cadbury.

If you lived in a terrace you would not see any neighbours - only hear them through the wall.
My granny lived in a terrace house. And the dunny was at the back of the back yard. My grandfather had a reputation as a bit of a snorer. Apparently, the whole street could hear him snore. I never met the man - he died before I was born.

I just read a bit about a Finnish gentleman who you wouldn't want to tick off. I mean, even more than you wouldn't want to tick off any Finn. The Soviets managed to do just that in 1939 when they decided to invade Finland. This gentleman, Simo Häyhä, was quite a good shot - and a good hunter. So when he picked up his rifle and went out into the woods to welcome the invading forces he managed to kill some 500 enemy soldiers in about 100 days. With his bolt action rifle with open iron sights. And a couple of hundred more with his sub-machine gun. He preferred the iron sights for several reasons; they didn't fog up, they didn't reflect light as a scope could do, and it enabled him to keep his head just a tad lower.

The severe cold (down to -43°C/-45°F) helped a lot as your target would freeze to death even if the bullet didn't kill. But to wait perfectly still for hours in those temperatures... He was meticulous in his preparations, like putting snow in his mouth to avoid anyone seeing his breath while shooting, and pouring water on the snow in front of his position to avoid the muzzle blast to disturb the snow.

When later asked what made him so good as a sniper, his simple reply was: "Practice." Very Finnish.

Pretty damn impressive.
Competent folks in the winter those Finns.
