Originally posted by Liney I may be missing the point here, and I can't find Bobs original comment to respond to, but when She Who Must Be Obeyed (SWMBO} went to the UK last year she just bought a local SIM card and some credit on it and put the card in her phone. Skype will let you set up an "local" number to your home that when you call it transfers you to a foreign number and all you pay is the connection to the local number.
For example, SWMBO has a local to us number for her mum in Scotland, and I had a local to us number for a colleague in Wales that I had to call regularly.
Skype will permit video calls or voice only (depends on your internet speed, sometimes voice is the best option} and at the end fo the trip Mrs Bob can ditch the UK SIM card and put her old one back in the phone.
ALDI in the UK do some good SIM card deals
Last time there, I just got a prepaid SIM through O2, a couple of quid was all that was needed. They then kept giving me free data and minutes as promotions to try and keep me as a customer, even though I was leaving the country within two weeks.
