We're not world travelers, and I'm not that smart, here's my question:
When Mrs Bob goes to Scotland and England this fall she won't have cell service, so.........
Can we stay in contact via text when she has a wifi connection?
I'm guessing FB messenger would work. I know, Eww!

Not buying the 3K hociR livE.
Too busy cooking 93 Finnish meatballs.
It just occurred to me that meatballs are the only thing you can buy at IKEA which comes preassembled.

We're very fortunate here in NZ having quite a bit more space. Not 20 acres. That would be nice, but we only have one neighbour who's house I can see and that works for me. None would be better, of course.
Neighbours? What are those?

International roaming on the cell phone.

Your cell carrier should be able to allow you to add it to your plan (for a additional monthly fee of course), and when she returns, call them and have it removed.

Yes but better off to stick with wi-fi if possible.
The carrier plans, thou good, are designed for pure profit and not necessarily easily understood.
How do I know that ...
I've always been of the opinion that plans suck. Prepaid plans are the way to go, and owning you own phone.

Sorry Tim, but IMHO, this is a case of folks helping others. When British Columbia had extensive fires a couple years ago, fire fighters from other countries came to help. When California was in the same position, the same thing occurred. No one country can have the resources to fight these massive fiery outbreaks. Thankfully help always seems to comes from all corners of the world.
Spot on. Help is appreciated when all you can breathe in is smoky air.

I may be missing the point here, and I can't find Bobs original comment to respond to, but when She Who Must Be Obeyed (SWMBO} went to the UK last year she just bought a local SIM card and some credit on it and put the card in her phone. Skype will let you set up an "local" number to your home that when you call it transfers you to a foreign number and all you pay is the connection to the local number.

For example, SWMBO has a local to us number for her mum in Scotland, and I had a local to us number for a colleague in Wales that I had to call regularly.

Skype will permit video calls or voice only (depends on your internet speed, sometimes voice is the best option} and at the end fo the trip Mrs Bob can ditch the UK SIM card and put her old one back in the phone.

ALDI in the UK do some good SIM card deals
Last time there, I just got a prepaid SIM through O2, a couple of quid was all that was needed. They then kept giving me free data and minutes as promotions to try and keep me as a customer, even though I was leaving the country within two weeks.

We know what each other looks like when we talk.
In that case, you don't need to let her know of the possibility of video call.

She'll only be gone for 10 days, I'm sure she can get through it without seeing my ugly mug.

They stole that from this, original commercial.
