When I was a kid...say from 5 years old to 15 years of age, I played hockey...defense. From around 5 to 11 years of age, I used store catalogues as shin pads, under my hockey stockings. In Canada in the '50's the T. Eaton company and The Hudson's Bay Company were two enormous, Canadian general stores that did big mail order business in Canada and their catalogues were big, solid and flexible. We got a Hudson's Bay and a Eaton's catalogue...each....every year. I would use the past years catalogues....one for each shin.
I eventually got regular shin guards, but to this day I maintain that the old Eaton's/Bay catalogues were much better at absorbing, slap shot pucks and hockey sticks wielded forcefully and 'low' by opposing players .
I don't know what young hockey players do now...given that there are few thick catalogues made...probably fewer large general stores in existence. Don't think their replacement with all the on line shopping now...ie; an Apple and a PC computer tablet are going to be able to cut the mustard as hockey shin guards.

We used to call that 'shelter' a Labatt's tumour, as you probably recall as a fellow Canuck.
Others from different parts of the globe, know it as a beer belly.
