No experience with RAID... But within that, my understanding of what you want to do is to have files on your Linux box that you can access from other machines?
In a nutshell.

Computer Geeks!
I only know how to turn one on and off, but I'm fine with that.

Thanks!

So, I want to set up the RAID on those Western Digital Reds. Would either of you have any experience setting up a RAID on Linux? I have a peer to peer network in my house and shop, mostly on Cat 5 cable, simple unmanaged network hubs, and all behind a hardware firewall. I want to be able to access the RAID on this new Ubuntu box from any connected computer on the network. At this point most machines are Windows units, one on NT, one on 2000, one on XP Pro, and a PC and three laptops on 7 Pro.

I'm thinking RAID 5 or RAID 10.

Any tips, tricks, suggestions?

Oh, and if my experience thus far continues, Ubuntu will be my new operating system standard.

For sharing, I suggest Windows networking ... SAMBA.

Which command turns computer geeks off? Could be useful to know.

What an exciting time for you! I've done lots of Linux over the years, especially early on, but I only use it and deal with it on servers these days. I manage three of them, web proxies, at work.

Windows certainly uses the terminal. Powershell has revolutionized Windows sysadmin in the last decade. So much so that when you install Windows server (or ten thousand instances of them at the same time) you're asked if you need to bother with the GUI or not. If it's just part of a cluster, it might as well be the 'Core' installation, forget the graphics.
Full circle...cool to here the term cluster as I worked on the original...VAXcluster

I use the term cluster often, but can't repeat the word I put after it.

While you're at it, try this fun command*:

Code:
sudo rm -rf /

*okay, don't actually...

sudo means superuser do, giving you root privileges, pretty much making you omnipotent (see here)

rm is remove

-rf are options for rm, -r is recursive meaning all files and directories within a directory, and -f is force meaning no prompting to delete

/ is your root directory, i.e. everything

So, in theory, this deletes everything...

Flies hate cigar smoke, as do midges. It’s almost worth smoking ‘em (or a pipe) if you’re out photographing in a Scottish summer evening. However, praise be for Skin So Soft - no tobacco necessary, just slap it on.

If you had experience with RAID, maybe you could get rid of the flies?
