Yep, if your house is in a nice spot you can be certain it was a nice spot a thousand years ago, too, and burials mounds were often placed on nice spots. We have three burial mounds 20m from our house wall, dated to around 1050. That is, we have two left intact. The third one was excavated in the 1930ies.

Edit:
Note to Bert: The burial mounds are from around 1050 AD, not our house walls (they are from mid 1990ies).
You only have two walls left intact...?

Interesting post. Thanks for posting.

Vikings back then, had a significant effect on many countries, areas in...immigration, exploration, etc.

. I marvel at their intestinal fortitude when it came to early exploring well past the 'known' world and using watercraft that although were seaworthy for the time, were quite small...if you think about being in the middle of a raging sea.

I do believe we will continue to find out more and more about their contributions in years to come...through modern archeological methodology...for example electronic devices as ground penetrating radar, etc.

We heard some awful screaming around midnight last night. It sounded like a goat being murdered or something, and the dog was going nuts. After checking the goats, they were all there away, so a bear hadn't dragged one out as we first thought. The noise was also coming from a different direction, but probably within 100 metres or so of the house. We also made sure nothing had somehow got stuck in the electric fence. No definite conclusion as to what it was, but after listening to some Youtube videos, I'm 99% sure it was a cougar screaming. Which means it's trying to attract a mate to here...
Porcupines mating make an awful racket

The last concert we went to featured a well known singer of international repute, who got his start in the '60's and his performance/voice....50+ years later... was ...let's say...well past his best before date. I'm still thinking about how much equipment/ music we could of bought with the $ 400 CAD we spent on good tickets.

After I bought a CD...the best of ? ?...which was recorded when he could hold a tune and that's how I prefer to listen to his song styling's

Nope, he was an Icelander who died in Greenland. His father was born in Norway, though.
Erik Leifson, then!

As Jim says:

People who think they know everything are really annoying, especially for those of us who do

In my province we have perhaps the largest numbers of people with Icelandic background outside of Iceland. Many Icelanders immigrated here in the 1870's/'80's and they have done very well .

They're a resourceful bunch. I guess living on a volcanic rock in the North Atlantic makes you do well or die.

Erik Leifson, then!
Leif, son of Eirik the Red, son of Thorvald, son of Ásvald, son of Úlf, son of Øxna-Thórir who was brother of Naddodd, the dude that discovered Iceland.

Eirik's family left Norway after Thorvald had a disagreement with some neighbours, a disgreement that ended in people dying. Eirik then grew up on Iceland and was forced to leave Iceland after some disagreements where several neighbours ended up dead. We all take after our fathers, don't we. Anyway, Eirik brought his family, Leif included, to Greenland. After his 3 year period as an outlaw ended he went back to Iceland to convince people to settle this fantastic land he had found (he hadn't, but was probably the first to successfully settle there) - and as part of the PR package he named it Greenland. It worked.

But sorry, Eirik died in Greenland, too.

Could it have been Ásvald, then? Probably not - he came from the southern part of the country
