Today is a special holiday in the U.S. It's Columbus Day. A day to celebrate the great explorer Christopher Columbus.
The guy who didn't know where he was going when he left, didn't know where he was when he got there, and didn't know where he'd been when he got back.
The guy who "discovered" a continent inhabited by indigenous peoples with organized societies, and which had been colonized by other Europeans centuries before.
All the other discoveries were pretty meaningless. His was the one that mattered. It started what is now known as the "Colombian Exchange". A massive exchange in goods and especially food products that changed the way the world ate and did things.

Two books by Charles C. Mann "1491 : New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus" and "1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created" are excellent reads on the subject. The best part is that they are based upon the latest DNA research and archaeological finds and is not judgemental. He is pushing no point of view. Just trying to state what was and what happened as best he can.

Great reads.

Hi Les

Glad you are on the mend.
I believe that it will be the 2040's before Bob & Bert will get to enjoy one ( at least ) of Marks pizzas ......... keep paddling boys.

Dave
Thx. Slow but surely. Just like the ocean canoe trip of Rob/Bert from the North American shores to NZ.

Good to hear you're on the mend Les.
I may mend a bit quicker than the Pacific canoe trip, although I maybe wrong.

So good to have you back!
Thx Racer. Good to be back and great pix of two polar bears giving each other the 'bear hug' ! As you know, up in the north of my province is the town of Churchill, well known for the many polar bears that live out there on the shores of Hudson's Bay.

Yep.

They need cows so the calves can suckle at the teats.
When not sucklng their young, the adults can feed each other.

But afterwards they need to shower.

Whoops. Could you have not told me earlier?

A little update on me and Bob:

Since I was never informed (that is not until it was too late) to not light the boat on fire, when Bob's stove went out and he couldn't get it going again to roast our evening catch of fish, I decided to use the centre of the canoe as a campfire. Had the bonus of being warm. Anyways, everything went up in flames (including my beloved bagpipes), and we were floating in the Pacific with nothing but the clothes on our backs. An inquisitive shark came up - since there were no pipes being played to scare it off - and I had read somewhere about bopping it in the nose to scare it off. That seemed to do the trick. Luckily, we were quite near an island that we had passed a few miles back before the boat went up in flames. After a wee swim, we're now enjoying life on the beach - drinking coconut milk and carving a canoe from a palm tree

Your adventure continues! At least, with the fire in the canoe, everything must now have a lovely smokey flavour. And Bob likes to smoke stuff, so all good. I'm surprised you could not save the pipes. Perhaps Bob was using those to fan the flames?

Shame about the bagpipes Bert ..................... he he he.
Racer better send the food tanker out again.
Mark your oven should be well ' cooked in' by the time they get there.

It seems Bob is particularly upset about the loss of the pipes.

Currently stuck on the shoreline of Washington state.
Before numbnuts burned our means of transportation I had hopes of meeting up with Racer for a bite to eat and a cold beer.
Root beer for the pyromaniac of course.

Racer,
If I can get our coordinates I'll send them to you in a PM.
Maybe the meetup can still happen if you're not working OT tomorrow.

Time to put that pocketknife to work! Lots of timber by the Washington shore, get Bertie busy building a RAFT. And don't let him play with matches ever again!

Like the pix of your Z. I'm old enough to remember how some cars back then and earlier, had sleek, beautiful bumpers...that complimented the lovely lines of cars like the earlier Z and MGBs....before safety regs cut in and compelled manufacturers to attach in some cases...huge bumpers....ie; the later on '70's MGB....which gave it that Mack truck look.

I know safety is important....but for a guy like me who has an eye for a svelte 'look'....well....
