It had a story saying that the pub, the Lamb and Flag, owned by St John’s College, had been closed at the end of January. I guess the college will no longer seeks to derive profit from the alcoholic excess of their students.
This is a pub which was there since about 1613, having started business at some other address.
Drinkers at this pub had included Bill Clinton the American, J R R Tolkien, C S Lewis, who used to go there together, and some someone called Thomas Hardy.
Back in '84, my wife and I went to England, Scotland and France. In that approximate order.
When we were in England in the '80's, southern England if my memory hasn't faded completely, was a very old building. it was an Inn that housed a pub.
Think the building had been around since the 800's, course there had been some modifications , refurbishing etc. here and there, but the rooms, ceiling height and beams, doorway size to ye olde washroom, etc....were still intact .
It was said that Chaucer himself, had visited the pub, and that pilgrims traveling by foot, centuries ago in medieval times (12th century), would stop off for rest and refreshments at this Inn...on the way to the site of their pilgrimage.
Whether this happened....or not..... is not for me to say.
So there we are.....my wife and I..... settled in for an evening of enjoyment and here, in order to get your glass of enjoyment, you had to belly up to the bar, order your drinks and bring them back...all by yourself.
The ceilings were very low, because as I was told back eons ago, when the building was built, people were a lot shorter.
I'm a fairly big guy, tall. I got up quickly....too quickly as it turned out....to refresh our drinks and bang hit the oak beam.... ...smacked it hard with my skull...I did.
My wife said I faltered a bit from the self imposed blow...
.....then steadied myself, grabbed onto the back of the chair to regain my composure.
There were a few guffaws from the locals, one said...that tall guy...must be a tourist.
