Waiting for K-3 specifics regarding...

The K-3 appears to offer significant new features and continues to work with all old lenses so it's a great development. The new AF looks fantastic. I generally don't take sports or other action photos so it's not that much of a draw for my photography. Regardless, I am glad that Ricoh fixed this because bad AF hurts sales.

This is what I need to know about the K-3 before committing:
  1. Dynamic Range: The K-5 has great DR but wide-angle landscape shots are still prone to blown-out clouds. While underexposing and other tricks help, more DR is always welcome. This doesn't seem to be something the K-3 is pushing; the new metering sensor is marketed as being for color control.
  2. Low noise for long exposures: Another biggie for me. I do a lot of astrophotography. The K-5 is pretty good but less noise simplifies stacking and other processing.
  3. The FLU card: This is a wildcard for me. If astrophotography software could tether the K-3, I would buy immediately. My workflow with the K-5 is cumbersome; PKTether often glitches, requiring a reboot of the laptop and pulling the K-5 battery before it starts working again. Most astro software only works with Canon, astro-specific cameras, or ASCOM drivers. Maybe FLU or a 3rd party will develop ASCOM drivers, and suddenly the K-3 will start working with a lot of existing astrophotography software.
I expect reviewers to cover #1 and #2. I don't have much hope for #3 because it's such a niche.

As you said yourself, our in-depth review will cover #1 and 2. FF is probably what you'll want to step up to for the best star photos, though. I hope Pentax ends up releasing one...

The FLU card is very interesting but I guess we will have to wait and see until the tethering software is published. It's probably going to be developed by a third party, so they might also support some existing interfaces.
