That all assumes the lens is up to that crop. I have had a similar thought when reading how the little superzoom P&S cameras get to the equivalent of a 1000mm lens from 180mm, and wondered how well a similar length lens would crop from APS-C. 24mp would give me a pretty good crop before getting to the number of pixels of my old K100d, which I liked pretty well at the time.
The only evidence I've heard on the forum on this topic indicates that the lowest rated lenses benefit most. Apparently The Sigma 18-200 and 18-250 increase in their resolution as much as 60% compared to better lenses that seemed to increase resolution around 30% when being used on a D7100 and D7000. More evidence is clearly needed.

For an amateur, who doesn't need 8fps, fast video, or two card slots, does the K3 offer something more? BTW, the K30 is not going to be replaced by a K3; it is just too great a camera
As an amateur, I feel excited on 8ftps, 24mp, AF improvement & focus peaking of K3 for 1)taking photos for moving butterfly, bee ...; 2)macro photography.
If not taking photo for moving objects, I think K-01 can handle well in most situations!

The tracking AF of the K-3 will be particularly useful for my concert work, and I will love the cropability for wildlife. I could certainly evolve to use the video and tethering features. Definitely not too much camera, but I will still have a place for my K-01 and Q7.

When is a camera too much camera?
More to the point I think - when is the photographer too much photographer for the camera?

All a camera really needs is shutter and aperture controls, and a means of framing and capturing the picture. Everything else: autofocus, autoexposure, various shooting modes, etc, etc, makes up for my deficiencies as a photographer. And boy, do I need all the help I can get!

Yes, I am happy to embrace my deficiencies.

Image wise, flagship model has 14 bit raw.
Operation wise, more buttons to access settings, top panel, hand grip option, front and back remote receiver. (but I like the AA option in K-r,K-30,K50)
No AA's in the K-3?

Yes you can use AAs in the K-3, but only if you mount the grip. In the grip there's room for 6 AAs, which is what the camera requires to be powered. Pentax DSLRs that support AAs in-body can manage with only 4 AAs. However, since the K-7, flagship cameras couldn't get enough out of 4 AAs and have required 6 AAs, for which there is just not enough room in the camera body. Fortunately the grips have a separate insert that can take 6 AAs: it's either an insert with the standard battery and a separate slot for a spare SD card, or an insert for 6 AAs (without the slot for the spare SD card).
