The stalwart K20D has been my main camera for five years. I returned a K-5 for front-focus in tungsten light.

If only it was that simple. Focus was off in tungsten light, dead on in natural light. Adjusting focus in tungsten didn't help because it was off by varying amounts depending on the light temperature. Unreliable AF in coloured light not an unusual complaint with the K-5, and not repairable from many accounts I read.

It was mostly intermittent problems with tungsten coloured light with the K-5 for me. I never had any issues with coloured flourescent, compact flourescent, or LED lighting indoors.

Much as I hate the now ubiquitous LED lighting for other reasons, it always seemed to work great with the K-5 AF, for some reason, no matter what colour it was. Same with flouros - whether bug lights or UV lights, no issues.

Same here, but "coloured light" is the term I remember hearing when the next bodies were announced. I expect the issue is confined to warm light, i.e. yellow and red spectra, as you would commonly see in concert lighting.

distinct line width down to 3000 lw/ph, extinction not until close to 4000. The K5IIs was line distinct lines to 2300 lw/ph. That would be a 30% increase in resolution. Based on a 50% increase in file size, that's simply awesome. You can only get about 25% better with a D800.



If trying to determine where extinction occurs doesn't give you a headache, I'm not sure what will. But it's well over 3000 lw/ph, I'd give it more than 31 but less than 32.

I like to have 100 lw/ph vertical depth per inch when printing… this should give you a nice 30x40 print.

Oh wow, I bought it because I felt compelled to, and I used absolutely zero logic- not even sure I had much control over my clicking finger, lol... However, after only an hour messing with it, I know I made the right decision! It's grrrrrreat!
I can fit all of my fingers on it without a battery grip. The controls are more ergonomically positioned. Live view is vastly improved. The viewfinder is wonderful. Even the balance seems way better. Thanks, Ricoh/Pentax- $$$ well spent!

2. You shoot wildlife, macro's, sports or moving objects.
3. You were ready for an upgrade.
4. Some things may be improved.

But really, if you didn't get by #1, you shouldn't even be thinking about a K-3. It's a camera for people who like Pentax cameras.. people who don't like their K-5, probably won't like a K-3. It's not going to be that much different. I'm not expecting it to be, and that's what's going to make me happy. If I wanted different, I'd be looking for something else. I want the same, only a bit better.

3. A used K-5 variant would work OK and cost half as much... however,
4. Upgraded low-light AF would be very helpful, more focus points less so, f/2.8 AF points definitely. The IIs could do some of that, but adjustable AA filtration sounds useful (or can a PP moire-healing brush work as well? do those exist?). I agree that 16Mpix is enough for me, 24 is OK, 36 just silly for the size I print and the price for ultimate-resolution lenses.
5. Definitely not my reason; were the K-5 in perfect order I'd be passing.
