My K3 arrived and so did the bad weather. Most disappointed.
Went out for some target practice with my 500mm sigma not expecting much in such terrible light.

The camera came up trumps.
1. Did not need to adjust AF for the lens
2. Under the conditions focusing rate was much higher
3. Smaller AF areas actually worked better for AF spot
4. Surprised that I got sharp photos at 200sec hand held with SR on
5. 800 ISO only had a small amount of noise in the dark areas.
6. Under the conditions I couldn't get many birds focused while flying. may have been using the wrong settings.

Photo 1. Fairywren. ISO 200. 200 sec. F5.6. spot AF. handheld
Photo 2. Cormorants. ISO 800. using program. AF all, hand held, SR off
Photo 3. Thornbill. ISO 800. set to F5.6. spot AF. hand held.
Although thornbill and Fairywren heavily cropped, original still has loads more detail.

Conclusion, if I can get good shots when the light is crap, this camera is a winner.

Bob, those are great bird shots. What settings were you using for BIF?

I did two things
Auto all points and AFC
Auto all points and AFA - tried it as I didn't know what it was - didn't seem to help at all (still not sure what AFA is)

This thread may be more helpful https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/172-pentax-k-3/241522-k-3-bird-flight.html
I came across another, but I need to think where it came from. When i do I will post it, but may not be until tomorrow.

AF-A allows the camera to change between AF-S and AF-C if it senses a moving subject. I found it useless on the K-x. I haven't tried it with the K-3.

I just guessed at some settings to get the photos in the other thread. I think this setting is critical and needs more investigation:
16. 1st frame action in AF-C
It was successful on Auto, but I intend to try Focus Priority next time.

This setting also needs investigation:
18. Hold AF status
Medium worked for me, but the setting should depend on how likely you are to hit a distraction or obstruction in the frame.

This setting seems obvious to me:
17. Action in AF-C Continuous
I set it for Focus Priority. I can't use a photo that is not in focus.

I've wanted to test my K-3's astrophotography capabilities but the Pacific Northwest has been locked under clouds for the last couple weeks. Tonight wasn't ideal but a few breaks in the clouds were enough. This was taken with my older copy of the Sigma 17-70 F2.8-4 DC Macro lens. I manually focused using Liveview as best as I could (this lens has been hard, even with F2.8),

Capture settings: DNG RAW, 15s @ F2.8, ISO1600, 17mm.
ACR RAW settings: 3100K, -36 Tint, Lens Correction applied, Sharpening (25,1.0,25,0), Noise Reduction (40,50,0,25,50).
Photoshop CS6: Only level adjustment for color correction- no additional noise reduction.

I want to do more (as well as same shots w/ my K-5) once the weather cooperates.

Steve

After a few days of playing, I am becoming familiar enough with the new K-3 to begin shooting with a modicum of confidence in the outcome. This image was shot without any exposure bias and as expected was flat as a board when brought up for pp. I ended up pumping it up by EV 1.12 to get the whites back to where they should be. At 100% there is a noticeable fine pattern at ISO100 in the featureless expanses which a touch of raw denoising eliminated. Definitely a different output than previous K series sensors but the K-3's seems to be just as malleable. The higher resolution is evident in this crop.

Out and about on another dreary day. I can't wait to see what this camera does when we have some sun, but I might have to wait until spring to find out.

Great job @wuzet. Good to see how the camera refocuses after the light/telephone pole. Interesting!
