wow, great compostition and rendering, but I hope you don't mind when I say that sometimes geographical phenomena make the photographer's task a little easier by its sheer majesty. Also it's hard to tell why the 20 second exposure. Did you have an ND on the lens or was it actually quite dark at the time?

Thanks... This was shot right after sunset. I'll try and capture something a little less majestic next time.

Very nice. I wonder if the second wouldn't look good as a black and white photo.
Thanks, I tried it as B&W but it lost any sense of 3 dimension. Worked as an abstract in a way, but not a great one.

Had my Sigma 24-70 out doing some AF tests today. It's the only lens I still have to set some compensation for. This was taken before I finally settled on a -5 adjustment and indeed, the focus point isn't exactly perfect, but I still kinda liked it. Bokeh is not quite as smooth as other lenses in my bag, but still not too bad.

Chasing the dragon

Shot on a trip to Komodo and Rinca Islands in Indonesia in November 2104.

When I was about ten years old (1956), David Attenborough had a series on UK TV called Zoo Quest for a Dragon, which culminated in the capture of a Komodo Dragon. It caught my imagination - not too many dragons in 1950s England - and my grandmother bought me the book of the series for Christmas that year.

The film is still on YouTube - this is the dragon capture sequence:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

The book got lost somewhere but the dragon stayed with me. When I moved to live in Indonesia, I managed to find a copy of the book in a secondhand bookstore and in November 2014 (almost 60 years after seeing the TV series) my wife and I went to Bali ( a 90 minute flight from our home in Java), flew on to Labuan Bajo and then sailed to Komodo and Rinca to chase the dragons.

Wonderful shot. The lighting really brings out the texture of this lovely object.

Nice.
From 500mm down to the Tamron 17-50 zoom, you really know how to get results from your gear.

Thanks rawr for your kind comments, I've made a mistake, it's Tamron 70-200 not 17-50.
