Quick question. Perhaps this is basic, but I'm new to DSLRs. Is the purple in the blown out areas of the photos I posted CA or an artifact of sensor clipping? I was using the 18-135 on those.

Thanks,

Doug
Looks like purple fringing to me.

Purple fringing or CA like that is normal - it's a property of the lens and how well it can counter it, but it'll generally appear in high contrast areas of a shot, e.g. a bright light in the dark.

It's there, above the medal in the folds. Nothing too bad, but a simple cleanup in LR.

I'm sorry but it is not "normal" and it's a fault (not a property) of a lens. While there aren't perfect lenses that do away completely with CA that picture looks kinda bad from a CA perspective. Your opinion might differ though.

I don't really worry about purple fringing. Some of my favorite lenses (FA31, FA77, and DA *200) are purple fringe makers, but you can fix it with a single click in lightroom.

I'm pretty impressed. 300mm F* with 1.7x Promaster TC.

K-3 is a nice camera. It really is.

. . .
Nice photos. This camera really needs excellent lenses, like those, to show its best.
I won't be putting the DA*16-50 on it very often.

Nice pictures, Rondec..
Adrian Roman I hope you enjoy your K-3 and maybe if I get this year to my birthplace you'll let me play a little with it.

Anna.

Shot with FA 77. Mostly posted because it was shot at iso 6400 and it is pretty clean to my eyes, without any noise reduction.Obviously pretty decent light here, if there were strong shadows, you would see a lot more noise, but I'm pretty satisfied.

This is shot with Sigma 150-500 at 500mm, F8, 1/320s, ISO-100. The anti alisasing was switched off.
The in lens shake reduction of the Sigma was in mode 1.

This is the full image scaled down 5 times to 1200x800 (for web display) but the inset is 200% crop (2x2 suqare for every pixel in the original).

Sharpening 60 at 1.5 radius. Detail 25 and masking 0

Noise reduction: Luminance none, chroma 25 (LR default)

I have boosted shadows a bit which has added some noise.

The detail seems quite extraordinary to me. Actually I'm also very happy about the Sigma as I wasn't expecting it would be able to make use of the extra resolution of the K-30 compared to the K-30.

Interesting also that the AF is spot on without any fine adjustment applied. I have +2 on the K-30 and also the K-r with this lens.

K-3 and DA18-135WR at The Great Wall

I think my DA18-135WR just got sharper for free! Just by using it on the K-3 ;-)
